  • Good morning!

It's a rainy, windy morning, but it's FRIDAY! I"m feeling much better today, and I'm even hungry! That may not be so good.

Today will be an arts & crafts day, with maybe a cooking project. Audrey gets a little upset that she doesn't get a chance to bake since she doesn't get home until after 4. But she does enjoy the baked goods.

    What's everyone doing today?
  • Good morning.

Glad you are feeling better, Cottage. You should never be sick on the weekend. We have sunshine on the menu today but the radar shows me crud in your area.

Donna was here yesterday and did a super job of removing the last traces of Hershey's bleeding tail from my kitchen cabinets and walls. She cried while she was doing it! $12.50 per hour and compassion too! The guy also came and fixed my TV reception so I was able to watch Grey's last night - and fell asleep halfway through.

Today I have absolutely nothing on my schedule except some cooking if I feel like it. I also plan to cut out a new quilt top - nothing spectacular, just a quilt top for Victoria's Quilts. We have a rainy weekend coming up so I will cozy in and do some stitching.

So what are y'all up to this Finally Friday Morning?
  • Good morning Cottage So glad you're feeling better! We have the rain here too, all weekend. Maybe I should try an arts and crafts project

Ruth - It looks like a good cooking weekend. What's on the menu? All the cooks here keep me from getting stuck in a rut

It's my work at home day finally! It's been a crazy busy week so it will be nice to have a mellow day. With the rain in the forecast all weekend I'll probably do a little work over the weekend and a little cooking today. I have 6 more lbs of plum tomatoes, probably the last of the year, which will go to the dehydrator. I hope to get to the orchard to pick some heirloom apples this time. Would love to dry some of those. Then yogurt, bread, and some kind of bean soup for the week. Anyone have any new, interesting bean soup combos? Hmm, wonder if I could make a ratatouille bean soup??

I'm also signed up for a 5 hour canning class tomorrow. I was hesitant to give up a Saturday during migration but it might be a good way to spend a rainy day and I would love to learn to can safely. I remember my Mom doing it and have read a lot but am still a little nervous.

    Ahh, such an exciting life

    Have a good day Chicks
  • CyndiM, I can if you mean in jars. I never did do the tin can stuff but have good luck with jars and the boiling water or steam method. I guess it's genetic but I love to see rows of shiny jars of tomatoes and relish on my shelves.

On my cooking list for today, I have Soup au Pistou, ratatouille and the lazy cabbage rolls from our recipe board. They've been on my list a few days but don't seem to get done by themselves! I also have a collection of chicken bones that need to be made into stock - maybe over the weekend.
  • morning girls,

so you know If you saw the daily thread yesterday we were approved for Boone... pretty boy.. now the fosters are saying they want us to take Scout too... I can't do that.

so today i fight with the rescue to see if they will give me Boone.

cottage glad you are feeling better
ruth so glad Donna cleaned compassionatly and you got your tv back have a great easy day
cyndi enjoy the work at home day

me i'm off to fight for that puppy (he's closer to 3 or 4 btw)
  • Go get 'em, Nessa. I love Newfies! Big slobbery, gentle giants! Yes, two would be a bit much.
  • All this puppy talk had me looking at the local Humane Assoc. website pics this morning. Must resist the puppy envy....

Ruth - Just the regular glass jar canning. I just want to do tomatoes and maybe apple sauce. I've just been reading a lot about modern tomatoes not being acidic enough and needing to be acidified along with other canning hazards. I think a class will just give me the extra confidence to go ahead and do it.
Now you reminded me about that cabbage role casserole too I was thinking about a vegetarian version. I love cooking weekends (though it would be nice to have a dishwasher!)

    Good luck Nessa!
  • In a rush to get to school early, so just wishing everyone a great day. We are making applesauce today to culminate our week of Johnny Appleseed (Happy Birthday to Johnny and my Mama today!) I spent 2 hours last night peeling and finely chopping 3 bags of apples...something to do while watching Survivor. I also want to show the kids that food can be sweet and yummy without sugar. Going to cook it in a crock pot with agave, cinnamon, vanilla and pumkin spice. The whole second grade is going to get a taste (8 classes) during our "Apple festival" this afternoon. They are also going to "paint" with the "star" in the apple cores I saved. Should be fun and messy.

A real quick funny. One of the kids asked me the other day "Mrs. D, do you like sugar water?" and I said no I didn't because sugar is not good for you. He said you never eat sugar? and I said, "Well only rarely. I don't like to eat stuff that is bad for me" and another kid said "Well, what do you put in your kool-aid? I thought it was hilarious, but tried not to laugh. Most of these kids have horrendous diets loaded with sugar and chips.
  • oh Cat that's so cute.... so what do you put in your koolaid?

    we put splenda in ours!
  • If I ever had to drink it, I'd add gin or rum! Kids are so cute - sometimes I miss teaching.
  • I'm with ruth, I don't drink the stuff, but gin, vodka or rum with a twist may be the way to go, especially after dealing with kids, paint and apple cores!
    ya'll have a good one..
  • Blech, Koolaid. I was never a fan of it, even when I was a kid. I honestly didn't even know it was still sold anymore.

CYNDI, my mother cans tomatoes, carrots, green beans, peaches, pears and apples every year. She gets immense pleasure from it. It seems like too much trouble to go to, to me, but she's been trying for years to get me interested in it. The rows and rows of jars on her basement shelves sure do look pretty, though.

NESSA, good luck on getting Boone! I hope it works out well!

CAT, making applesauce with your students will be a lot of fun! I helped out with Audrey's class last year, and it seems all the kids enjoyed their turn of helping to stir it. They ate it with graham crackers for their mid-morning snack. We like to make stamps with the apple stars. Sounds like it's going to be a fun day in your classroom!
  • Good morning Cottage, Ruth, Cyndi and Cat and Nessa! Sounds like you are having a nice day today.

Hello to everyone else who comes as well.

I have been so busy at work the last couple of days have not been able to post but like Cyndi today is wfh day so I have a bit more time and its FRIDAY!!!!

Well tonight is DS football game and tomorrow a visit to a University to check out.

    Have a great day
  • Good morning chicks,
    Happy Friday.
I was happy to see tk is back online!
    Nessa, congrats on the pup.
Cat, my DH loves Kool Aid. But without any sugar. How gross is that?
Ruth, your food day sounds very South of France. Have a good mini-vacation.
Cyndi, ratatouille soup sounds yummy - would be good with white beans or chick peas, I think. My mom cans everything. I've only done jelly and applesauce so far.
    Hi Pearl! simulpost.

Everyone has such cozy weekends planned. We are supposed to go canoeing tomorrow with the Girl Scouts. Hope the weather is nice or we get cancelled. DS is home sick today, I thought he was faking but his temp was up above 100. I don't know what's up with my kids lately, they usually are never sick.
  • Schmoodle, they've already cancelled Girl child's soccer game tomorrow. not supposed to be nice weather... I'm sorry.
