Limiting Fish?

  • I am not a real big meat eater to begin with so having meals with meat involved are a struggle for me a little. Even if I am starving I have a hard time choking down much chicken, beef, or pork. I can but it's not all that fun. I do on the other hand love me some orange roughy lol.... I know there are mercury concerns on this, so how much should I limit myself?

Just want to say thanks in advance for any help in this area. I have been reading through old posts on the board and am learning so much!

  • Autumn,
If you go to edf.org then scroll down and click on "Seafood Selector", then click on "Health Alert List" there is a chart that lists the maximum servings that can safely be eaten each month. Unfortunately orange roughy is only 2 servings per month due to mercury. The list may help you choose other fish to try which would be healthier choices.
  • i eat salmon about every other day
    or mahi mahi
    or tilapia

and i close my eyes and pretend these are good for me.
  • Walmart has 3 oz. packages of salmon for $.88. Chicken of the Sea I think. They're perfect for salads. I take them to work all the time.
  • Nessa,
Mahi and Tilapia are listed as 4 or more per month...the Salmon is also 4 or more per month unless you use farmed/Atlantic Salmon then only once a month is recommended. Wild CA, OR, WA and wild (Alaska) are all 4 or more.
This is a good resource for any fish safety info. The list has more fish at the bottom of the chart that are all 4 or more, so if you look for a fish on the chart and don't see it, scroll to the bottom.
  • I eat salmon and shrimp several times a week and have been for years.
  • Thanks Skinny for posting the link... I love different kinds of fish and this is great information!!!
  • Wow good link, thank you very much!

Bummer on the orange roughy though lol
  • the scientific evidence on fish consumption is very diverse on this topic regarding benefits/risks. here is a neat article that has a good overview and some good information to arm yourself with when making this decision. i personally try to eat fish/seafood on a regular basis (at least 2 times per week).
