Phase 1 friendly yogurt?

  • I'm thinking plain may be the only way to go during Phase 1. Anybody have some spruce up tips for plain yogurt that are Phase 1 friendly?

  • I just added a little splenda to plain yogurt and thought it was Delish!
  • I like to add cinnamin, flaxmeal, and a bit of splenda. It's also wonderful with agave nectar and a few toasted nuts. If you have any of the DaVinci or Torani SF flavored syrups, they are also good mixed into your yogurt. You can order both through their website.
  • I prefer cinnamon and Splenda mixed in with plain yogurt but you can also take the powder from SF Jello gelatin and mix that in for some flavor.

    What is this agave nectar? Would it be considered a fruit?

  • Kara, agave nectar is a wonderful substitute for sugar because it is low on the glycemic index and doesn't cause cravings. It's really popular for use by diabetics and perfect for the South Beach Diet. It's derived from the agave plant, and isn't considered a fruit. More of a vegetable, I think. I don't know how available it will be for you to find, but here in the states we can find it in most grocery stores. It has a wonderful flavor, almost like honey, and the darker amber variety is tastier that the lighter version.
  • Hi, Kara! That's actually an interesting question...is agave nectar okay in Phase 1? It's actually the sap from the agave cactus, Kara, so it's not a fruit, but it does have some sugar in it, so I don't know if it would be okay or not. It's a great sweetener option in Phase 2 & 3, for sure.

    I do what most of the people here have mentioned; usually SF syrup and flaxmeal. I always add cinnamon, since it's supposed to help your blood sugar levels and deter Type II Diabetes.
  • Thank you for the explanations! I'll look for it in the commissary tomorrow but won't hold out any hope. Just in case it's not Phase 1 legal I'll just hold onto it for Phase 2. Only eleven more days!

  • I add a bit of pure baking cocoa, tiny bit of vanilla extract, & splenda. Yum. I found I actually like it better than other pre-flavored yogurt.

    Pretty sure I'm not breaking any rules, but maybe someone can alert me if this is counting toward sweet treats (I don't tend to have any anyway, except for the ricotta desert).

    I just found the updated list for SB Phase 1 foods and saw that yogurt is considered a dairy item rather than strictly a sweet treat - so go for it!

    tomandkara, I haven't checked the label on my vanilla yogurt yet to see if it's okay but I can eat that stuff plain. Vanilla soymilk is, so I don't see why yogurt wouldn't be...Anyway, just a thought!

    or I'm going to try some SF choc syrup when I get to the store for some greek yogurt!
  • I buy Krogers brand SF yogurt. It is made with spenda. It has less carbs than regular brands.
  • Ooooo, I put a small-size package of sugar free black cherry Jell-O powder in a big tub of plain yogurt and it was soooo good! I had to limit myself to a half cup!
