What *are* artificial sweeteners?

Are they derivitives of sugar or just some scientific concoction?

I'm curious.

I think scientific concoction is a good word for them all. Splenda is made from sugar, but is chemically altered to the point, I would hesitate to call it a derivative of sugar.
