Morning gals! I just had to make myself accountable and let you know that I had a slice of whole wheat toast with margerine last night. I had made some mango yogurt on Friday and had one serving of that Friday morning for breakfast, then the rest of my day I followed a Phase 1 plan. Yesterday I had the same breakfast and then had packed some cashews for a snack and a Greek salad for lunch. I had a cheese stick with it because I forgot to pack the tofu, and then another yogurt for snack while we were out. For dinner we made omelets (mine had two egg whites and one whole egg with mushrooms, onion, and garlic, topped with salsa) and I had a piece of toast with it. My weight has stayed the same and I didn't have any cravings, but I'm not going to be adding anything else for the next couple days because I had planned on taking this slowly. I think I will stick with one fruit and one grain a day until Thursday, which will be the end of my first week on Phase 2.
So now you know. Keep me to it! Kara |
Hey Schmoodle,
Do you think it was the fruit? That's what I'm afraid of too. I don't want the addition of a "healthy carb" to trigger the cravings again. I ate some birthday cake on Thursday night and all day Friday I seemed hungrier. That really scared me. I ended up overdoing pistachios this week too. The first day I wanted to eat 35 (an ounce) but at 42. The second day I found my fingers going back to the can over and over and over again until I lost count. I finally gave the can away. It's that behavior that scares the bejeebers out of me! I'm doing the Beck Diet Solution, so I'm supposed to be working on that but, honestly, it takes so much extra time and energy to be a good SouthBeacher that I don't have time to do all the behavior modification stuff that will make me a saner eater. L |
Liannie,
It may have been the fruit, but I'm not sure. I had a big cantaloupe here at home and after last night I was afraid of it (hee, afraid of a cantaloupe), but I finally decided to cut it and see. I had some after dinner and so far, no problem. I really don't know what set me off last night - according to fitday, I'd had over 1300 calories, and that baked eggplant thing was pretty filling, so I had no reason to be hungry. I think I learned two things - I'm not going to buy more nuts to keep around, they're just too tempting to me, and I need to plan a dessert or evening snack ahead of time so that I'm prepared. I hadn't been eating dessert after dinner all week. Tonight I made some ricotta creme with cocoa, vanilla, and splenda, and put a spoonful of peanut butter on top, and had it about half an hour after dinner. I feel fine now, even though I only had 1100 calories today. That's lower than I usually do, but if I average it in with yesterday, I'm right on target. I think Kara's right that I need to learn some coping skills. Water might have done the trick. That's what scares me the most. I feel really amazed that I am staying on plan, but I've got a year at least until I get near target and I'm constantly scared and worried that something is going to knock me off, I'll eat bad stuff, and that'll be the end of it. I'm travelling all next week for business, then come back and throw a birthday party for my parents next weekend, so I think I'm going to have some real challenges soon. I really, really want to do this. Thank goodness for this forum, nobody I know is trying to lose weight right now, and my husband is sick of hearing about SBD! |
As we can tell from everyone posts, each person reacts differently to foods, I have been doing really good on phase II losing atleast .5 a week, but this is now second week of not losing any weight and I think I may have moved too much into phase 3 eating. So I am trying to adjust my eating, I always lost weight when I kept breakfast phase 1 while on phase 2 but since I discovered whole wheat breakfast foods and pizza I haven't lost. I haven't gone off plan but I think I had too many grains back in....so I went to grocery store today and stocked back up on eggs and turkey bacon and am trying to really watch the grains and limit to only 2 a day, fruit I have kept to one serving a day. I don't want to go back on phase 1 because I do not have any cravings issues but I guess if the scale doesn't move next weigh in that is what I am going to have to do, I so want to move past 195 on the scale.
By the way you are all so inspiring I love reading your posts, it does keep me op. Atleast I can say that I have been op for 5 months and I didn't even have birthday cake on my birthday or DH's BD, I was not tempted at all. Which is a hugh breakthrough for me, I was sweet junk aholic. |
Count out your nuts ahead of time and put them in baggies so you'll only eat what you have in front of you. I CANNOT sit at the table with a box of nuts or I WILL eat the whole thing, but if I have my baggie then I'm fine. I tend to take nuts as a snack when I'm out and can't get to the rest of the stash. When I'm home, I'll have cottage cheese or a cheese stick or peppers and hummus. I've found that portioning out my bit and putting away the leftovers is a great trick for me. Hope it works for you!
And Pearl, isn't that amazing about the cravings? I am loving South Beach for that reason alone!!! The absolutely delicious and veggie-packed recipes are great, too! Kara |
i am telling you all that wheat really stalls a lot of women out...
|
Missmess, I don't want to freak you out! I am still not craving things like I used to. Even though I ate too much Friday night, it was still all food that was on the plan. In the past, it would have been a half bag of oreos! And I had a bag of oreos in my cabinet, so I still feel slightly victorious. I am so paranoid about the cravings coming back, that I notice every little twinge, but I think we'll be fine if we make adjustments quickly.
Kara, I portion them out into little baggies too, and I take them along on the days I go to my office. I eat them in the car and that works fine. Problem was I grabbed the whole container of nuts on Friday instead of just one bag. I ate one preportioned bag, and then kept on going! Pearlrose, Good for you avoiding birthday cake. I've been worrying about that too because I'm having a birthday party next week. I'm not going to deny the birthday folks their cake, but I'm wondering if I should allow myself a bite, or avoid it completely. I know for sure I will not keep any in the house after the party! They can take it home or it goes in the trash! Nessa, I haven't had any wheat since I started the plan - over three weeks now. I haven't missed it at all. I may add a slice of whole grain bread in the future, and I will watch to see how it affects me. Anyway, I had a good food day yesterday, after my messup on Friday, so I'm over that little bump for now. I will learn from it! I was watching Sunday Morning a while ago, and they were doing a report on how sugar is in almost every processed food, and how much of it most Americans consume every day, and how your body sees a bagel the same as a bowl of sugar. They interviewed a lady who has a new book out called Sugar Shock. She said she was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and after she went off sugar, she stopped having migraines and felt much more alert and focused. It made me think how I have definitely felt more focused and energetic over the last few weeks. I get bad headaches too, and I haven't had one of those either, although it's too soon to tell if there's a connection. |
I think I am ready to join this thread. I skipped phase 1 because I am breastfeeding and have been on phase 2 for a week now, that is not counting overdoing it on butter when I went out last night for my Bday. I have already lost 5lbs this week and feel great.
I am lucky enough not to have cravings but that causes a problem for me that I also had last time I was on SB, I have no appetite. I have to force myself to eat most days and I don't really like to cook that much so it's easier for me just to not eat. I have been getting in at least 2 meals and 1 snack but working on getting the others in as well. Some days have been better than others. My endocrinologist wants to put me back on glucophage but I told him I am not ready to do that right now. If I do decide to take it again, it won't be for a while yet. eta - actually the lack of appetite has been my whole life, not just on SB, just wanted to clear that up. |
I love CBS Sunday Morning.... I have watched it since i was a kid with dad... he made me.... now i adore it...
I saw that program... sadly the website only has a brief blurb on it. but it was very very interesting basically everything has sugar we eat sugar sugar makes us feel good for a short time and creates insulin but then shortly after wards we are hungry again and eat more sugar.... |
Hi Fl mom, glad you joined in. I'm sure it's as important to eat enough as it is too eat not too much! If you don't like to cook, you'll have to develop some strategies - I don't like to cook much in the summer either, because I don't have AC in my kitchen. Last night I grilled about 8 pounds of chicken breast and have them bagged up in the fridge now. My husband and I can pull them out for lunch, and I might get another dinner out of them. I do stuff like that a lot. If I'm going to cook, I cook double always and try to get a couple of meals and some lunches out of it.
Nessa, that's it in a nutshell, except: Conclusion - sugar is evil! |
I just went to the CBS Sunday Morning website and checked out the article because I missed the show. And I can testify to how laced with HFCS and sugar everything is! I made a pizza last week with Barrilla green pepper and onion rustic pasta sauce that had no sugar, and I wanted to buy that same variety but I couldnt find it in two stores. I read every single label of every different kind of pasta sauce and I couldn't find ONE without added sweetener! So I was going to just make my own. Well, even a lot of the canned tomatoes had added sugar. I don't want to be a freak about this, but I'm going to have to make my own list of what I'm willing to buy that I can get in my neighborhood and then just order the rest online. I don't want people sneaking sugar into my food!
And that comment by the lady in the article about sugar not being the problem, but overeating and no exercise being the problem.... How about admitting that the sugar triggers the overeating?! L |
Oh, and WELCOME PEARLROSE! Don't let us freak you out. Some of us are scared to leave the comfort of Phase I, but we'll make it. Good job on that birthday cake! :)
|
Quote:
grains and starches are much more easily converted to sugar by our bodies than fats and proteins.... and veggies of course... while I do believe that HFCS is responsible for a lot of the upswing in Type 2 diabetes in our country I also believe that our current lifestyles with overeating and lack of exercise contribute deeply. |
Thanks Schmoodle. DH grilled 2 bags of chicken and I cut it a few different ways and bagged it up for the fridge. I am going to grill some steak today and do the same thing with it. I usually try to make things ahead on the weekend so I will just be able to get things out during the week and not have to cook during the day. I still have to make breakfast, lunch, and snacks for the kids but it doesn't take as much as it would to cook for me.
Sugar - oh sugar, how I miss it sometimes but it's the enemy. I have insulin resistance so the more sugar the eat, the worse I feel. |
Morning ladies!
I survived Phase 1- Lost 9 lbs. Now comes the part I've been looking forward to....something other than eggs for breakfast! I was very tempted to stick on phase 1 for a little while longer, but i can't stand another eggs and turkey bacon breakfast. I will check in tomorrow to let you ladies know how it went for the first day of P2. Time to go walk around the neighborhood in 90 degree weather....oh the fun of sweating. |
Hi Erika, Welcome to Phase II. I thought about staying on Phase I longer also, but it was definitely the eggs that decided me. I really wanted that oatmeal. Anyway, if you start Phase II very slowly, you're really still mostly doing Phase I. 9 pounds is great, congratulations on that loss. Don't freak out if it slows down now.
Missmess, I'll be waiting with bated breath to hear if you have any muffin after-effects! I've got my morning cleaning and laundry done, now I'm waiting for oldest DD to become fully concious. I just woke her up and it takes a little while. She brought all her clothes home from college and dumped them in her room, and I do mean DUMP. I was worried she'd bring some silverfish or something else nasty home with them, so I've made her wash EVERYTHING, dirty or not. It took us all week, it's ridiculous really, she's got enough clothes for five people. So before it all gets put away, I'm going to make her sort through and get rid of the stuff that doesn't fit or that she doesn't wear, and pack away all the winter. Hopefully when we're done, it will all fit into her closet and dresser. She used to be much better, but since she went to college, she's turned into an absolute slob! It drives me nuts. End of rant. Then off to the pool... |
Hi ladies! Happy Monday!
I am feeling like I'm getting out of control. No downward spirals, but I feel like I'm about to slip, so today I am going to be very strict about my portions and stick to my plan. I hope you don't mind if I post my meals for today so I feel accountable... Breakfast: Zucchini frittata (makes two servings so I am going to cook it up, portion it out, refrigerate tomorrow's portion, and THEN eat) Snack - 1/2 cup of cottage cheese Lunch - Leftover stuffed zucchini from last night (zucchini day today!) Snack - 15 cashews Dinner - Chilled Lime Tofu with Black Beans and Stewed Tomatoes (Phase 1 recipe) with a whole wheat roll Dessert - 1 cup of strawberries with 4 ounces fat free Cool Whip Now it's out there. Gotta stick to it! I will also be weighing every day this week to keep myself honest about what I'm eating and make sure that I don't let one slip up (although there won't be any!) lead me off plan. Keep me honest, ladies! Kara |
I've been thinking and I believe I will add a salad with my dinner. Keepin' it out there.
Kara |
I got Long John Silver's for DH for Father's Day but I ended up eating 3 pieces of chicken:( I didn't want it but we had a setback with our food situation and we have absolutely nothing SB left. Did I mention I don't even like LJS? That's all I have had to eat today so a double BAD for me. I didn't realize that everything we had was bad so the steak I was planning today didn't even happen. I only have a few things that are non parishable and that would be rice and potato type things. I knew if I made one of those, I'd eat way too much.
FYI - in case anyone missed it, our fridge died Thursday :( |
Oh man. You have been through the wringer!
Brush yourself off and move on. When can you get to the commissary? I know it's hard to not have the easy-to-grab stuff around, but I keep thinking that at least it's keeping me from snacking uncontrollably! Most of the South Beach food *is* refrigerated... Hoping you get everything cleared up soon! Kara |
Kara, I believe we will allow you the salad.
Fl mom, sorry for your refrigerator troubles. Must be the week for refrigerators going bad! I stuck to plan all day and had a lovely dinner at home with DH. We even got rid of the kids for the night again! I've been very spoiled this week... It's that dangerous time of night again, and I'm feeling munchy, but I'm off to drink some water, even if I do have to wake up to pee tonight. Wish me luck, I'm off to Florida in the morning for three days of meetings. It will be a challenge to stay on plan this week, I'm sure. I'm going to pack some cheese sticks and will probably hit the grocery store once I get there and check out if the hotel room has a mini-fridge. I'll be on the gulf coast, so hopefully I can treat myself to some good seafood. Yuck, I hate staying in hotels. And my usual coping mechanism is to buy a big bag of something yummy and try to find a movie on HBO in the evening. Or go shopping. Or find something good playing at the theatre and accompany it with a big bucket of buttered popcorn. I never sleep well. But I'll be near the beach, so I hope I can get in some nice beach walks instead, and make good use of the hotel pool. If the hotel has a business center, I'll try to check in, but I'm not dragging that heavy laptop along this time. If I can't check in, I'll give a full report at the end of the week. In the meantime, everyone have a great week! |
Bye Schmoodle! Have a nice trip. Funny you should say you're feeling munchy. That's the exact reason I came to the board just now. I'm really trying to resist the thoughts about what would taste good in my mouth. Popcorn or a granola bar would be the usual, according to the old rules. I just ate an ounce of cheese. That helped for about a 1/2 hour. I'm going to stick 100% to plan but I'm really obsessing about cereal right now! It's so hard to wait until Wednesday to start Phase II!
FL_Mom, life does suck without a fridge! And Kara is right about the Beachy foods all needing a fridge to stay fresh. Do you have a cooler you can keep full of ice? This has gotten me through some fridgeless times before. I hope you get something soon. I'd hate for you to fall too far off plan over something like that. Oh well, off to dream about cereal some more.... L |
Schmoodle, you made me laugh out loud! Thank you for your kindness and good will.
We should have a sarcasm battle. That would be fun! Kara |
Lianne, chew some gum!
Kara |
Have a good trip Schmoodle, atleast it's only three days.
Kara, I enjoy your sarcasm thrown in, makes me laugh. Well I almost done with this weekends 36 hours of work and now will have blessed four days off with family....Hope everyone has a great week....I did much better staying on Phase 2 today so back on track will see what scale says at the end of the week. |
Good job, Pearl, and glad I can make you smile!
Four days off would make the 36 hours over the weekend seem better. Hope you finish up quickly! I'm trying to stick more closely with a Phase 1/early Phase 2 meal plan this week as well, so we'll have to keep each other on track, K? Hey, where's my new-to-Phase 2 buddy, Mess? Whatcha been up to?! Kara |
I think bows is a cool theme. And getting married in Hawaii is going to be gorgeous! Have you ever been?
Branch out, Mess, and try some new stuff. Veggies taste different prepared differently so try steaming or roasting or grilling them. I hate raw cauliflower, but throw it in the oven at 400 for about fifteen minutes with some olive oil and red pepper flakes and I'll gobble it up! We love our broccoli steamed and then sauteed with some fresh minced garlic, with a bit of lemon squeezed on top. Slice some zucchini and summer squash and stick them on some shishkabobs (Is that how you spell that?) and bruch some olive oil on with garlic powder and a little salt and pepper sprinkled on top and grill them along with your meat. OOOOOO, and put mushrooms and cherry tomatoes on there, too! How about some green beans steamed and then sauteed with a little olive oil, garlic, and slivered almonds? Peas steamed and then drizzled with a little olive oil, a pinch of salt and pepper, and a sprinkle of parmesan? Brussel sprouts roast nicely, too. Couple ideas. Really, add garlic to anything and I'll like it! Kara |
That is a cute movie. And I'm glad you "signed" your name because I feel badly calling you "Mess"!
I stuck with my plan perfectly...right up until dessert. I did NOT have a piece of the pie I had made last night, but I did have a little of the chocolate Reddi Whip that my husband picked up at the store on top of my strawberries. It was really yummy. Oh, I also had a couple walnuts on my salad even though I'd had 15 cashews for snack. I don't think that was truly evil, though. My salad was screaming for walnuts. However, I also got to the gym today and did a half hour on the elliptical, so perhaps it all evened out. I'm off to do some laundry and then teach Tom about algebraic equations. Here's my meal plan for tomorrow: Breakfast - Leftover zucchini frittata Snack - Cheese stick Lunch - Cottage cheese in red pepper cup Snack - Cucumbers with hummus Dinner - Whole wheat rotini pasta with tomato sauce that has no sugar and steamed spinach with a sprinkle of parmesan Dessert - South Beach "peanut butter cup" Have a good Monday all! Kara |
Oooo, I just realized there's no fruit in there. Maybe I'll have an apple with my cheese stick for my morning snack.
Kara |
kara what's your protein with dinner... is there meat in your sauce?
|
Hi folks today is my first day on Phase 2. I am trying to take it slow. I didn't loose as much as I wanted on Phase 1 but I think its water because alot of people have told me I look like I am loosing so I will go with that. This week I am only going to add fruit just to see how my body reacts. Next week I will go back to grains. I have a great tuna recipe that I will post on the Phase 2 thread hope you all will try it and like it.
Good luck to everyone.....! |
WOW !! Look at all the beachbabes on this thread that I never met on the Daily one!!!! You gals are kickin butt!!!
:cheer: :cheer2: now you guys gotta venture out on to the daily thread too! Post your questions and get to meet some new chicks on there too. :p:):D |
On to my second week on phase 2... no weightloss to report. The scale did dip one pound on saturday, but that is just because I was cleaning my garage and I was dripping sweat!
I did have a downfall yesterday, and I am paying for it today. Incredible what this diet has done to my body. Since, I work out at least 5 times a week, I am loosing a lot of inches. I don't want to go shopping just yet, I will just walk around in saggy pants :D |
2nd day on Phase II. I added back a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast yesterday. So far today I have only had Ph. 1 foods. Not sure if I am going to add in any Ph. II for today or just wait and have oatmeal again tommorrow. I think next week that I may try to have an apple every couple of days. I was pretty satisfied with my oatmeal yesterday though since I haven't had any in forever. Hope everyone else is doing great on Ph. II
|
Nessa, you're right. There is no protein with my dinner. It's leftovers from what I made for the kids while Tom and I went out last Saturday. I'll throw some of those soy crumbles in the sauce when I'm reheating it.
Thanks! Kara |
Just a quick hello
Welcome to the new Phase I graduates - you are smart to add the oatmeal and fruit slowly. I look forward to our chats.
Had a difficult day today, which you can read about in the daily thread, if you are so inclined. But most importantly STAYED ON PLAN, although a little short on veggies and a little light on water (too much time in the car to have a full bladder). With a big thank you shout out to the Starbucks sugar free iced vanilla latte with skim milk that gave me quite a boost at the airport when I was tired, frustrated, and hungry, and I won't say nasty things about your $4 cups of coffee anymore. My flight was rescheduled for o' dark thirty in the morning, so I'm off to bed early. Have a great one. |
Oh dear. Glad you were able to stay on plan. Feel good about yourself!
Happy flying tomorrow morning! Kara |
Schmoodle I love the o' dark thirty! My friends and I say that all the time.... I have never heard anyone else use it.....guess its more common than I thought ha ha haa. Yes I agree with you about the Starbucks latte.... I just realized they have SF Hazelnut and SF Carmel too love love love it. I am going to try those next time because I always get the SF Vanilla Latte. I was trying to make it myself yesterday because the $4 is a bit riduclous but it didn't really work so now I will just pay the $4 and keep it as an occasional treat.
Today was good a bit emotional I actually ate Phase 1 food all day I had a lunch but my coworkers and I all went out to lunch today for a bday (at red lobster) so I could only do Phase 1 food there. I stayed away from the cheddar bisquits!:carrot: very tempted tho.... I will try to get with my fruit tomorrow...Later Ladies |
Those biscuits are VERY hard to resist. Great job.
|
I just got home from the commissary and there were pound cake samples at the deli, and I did NOT have a piece. I SO wanted one. I was hungry and they looked so moist and wonderful. But I will have the memory of them forever, without having to work off the calories!
Hey Nik, good job with the biscuits! Kara |
