Recommendation for crackers?

  • Hi everybody,

My 11 month old DD wants to eat crackers all day, and I'm having a terrible time finding decent ones to give her. I'm looking for:

    1) Whole grains
    2) No trans fats, low saturated fats, although mono- and polyunsaturated fats are perfectly fine given her age
    3) MUST have an "airy" sort of texture (similar to a saltine) so she can gum it up (only 2 teeth!), so the real dense stuff I like is out
    4) Low sugars
    5) Preferably something I could get in a regular grocery, since TJs and Wild Oats are a bit of a trek.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Anne
  • As a matter of fact right this second I am eating crackers.

These are Town House (wheat crackers) and I love them. I
think they would work for ya. The have 1g of sugar, saturated fat 1g,
no cholesterol, total fat 4g. The sodium is 140mg though. I have these
for my mid-morning snack they are really good light and buttery.

  • Hi L2R,

Thanks for the info! I just googled them, and they're close, but there is more partially hydrogenated oil (trans fats) in the ingredients list than whole grains. I'd eat 'em, but I think I'll keep looking for the kidlet.

  • Unfortunately, I don't have a suggestion for you. I think crackers are one of those things that are hard to find in whole grains. The only ones I've ever found were Ak Mak crackers at TJs. New products are popping up every day though so I'd just continue to read labels, more labels and more labels until you find what you want.
  • Hmm. All the ones I can think of are either found at whole-foods types of stores (Trader Joes, Whole Foods Market). Well, there are a few that might be found in 'regular' stores: Ryvita and Wasa.

On second thought, I wonder if you could make some, somehow.
  • There is a brand called "Late July" http://www.latejuly.com/ but it looks like they are only sold in health food stores. They have a store locator on their website.
  • Funny you should post this, since I just spent a long time reading cracker boxes for my kids. Everything seemed to have partially hydrogenated oil in it, argh! I may have to resort to making my own graham crackers (ds's favorite). Will dd eat cheerios? My kids also like pretty toasty toast. It dissolved, more or less, in their mouths. I found some recipes if you're up to a bit of baking.

  • Well, I just took the extra hour and went to Wild Oats, and was pretty shocked at what was there. Remove all the healthy sounding words (especially organic, organic, organic) and it was essentially the same stuff in the normal grocery, minus the trans fats. Refined white flour, sugar, oil. I found a couple more choice of whole grain and rediscovered Kashi's TLC, which I can get in my regular grocery store. It still has refined white flour as the first ingredient (disguised as 'wheat flour') but whole grains are 2nd, it doesn't have a lot of junk I don't want it to, and the texture is light enough DD can deal with it.

If I run past a Trader Joe's this weekend, I'll pop in and see what they have.
