I want to get into a routine where I exercise first thing in the morning (before class). My question is: for those of you who do this, do you eat breakfast before or after working out? Lately, I've been hungry as soon as I wake up but I hate to eat and then exercise...isn't that bad or just an old wive's tale? Thanks again!
I stumble out of bed, get dressed, drink a glass of water and start exercising. Then I take my shower and eat breakfast. If I get off track and eat first, I like to wait a couple of hours before exercising. This just feels better for me. Several books that I've been reading lately, Body for Life and the Biggest Loser book, also advocate doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, although I can't remember the reason for it off the top of my head.
For me it depends on what kind of excercise. If I'm just going for a nice walk around the neighbourhood..... then yes I eat. If I'm going to a step class, body sculpt, cardio class..... AND I have at least 1.5 hours BEFORE class, I'll eat....otherwise it makes me sick. I've heard from my class instructors, that after cardio your body's metabolism is so revved up that its best to eat (fuel) your body while the metabolism is up.
I have to drive about 20 minutes to get to my gym. I usually eat an apple or a granola bar in the car on the way and then have a banana as soon as I'm out of the shower. Then I'll have oatmeal when I get to work. I just eat so long before bed that if I don't eat before working out I get lightheaded.
I eat before and after working out. Before I work out, I eat things like 2 egg whites filled with 1 Tbl. of hummus or 1/2 c ff cottage cheese and 1/2 c blueberries. Since I do cardio for an hour and weight training for 1/2 hour and stretching, I need the fuel. Sometimes I eat a few nuts between the cardio and weight training. The after-workout meal is the most important, according to an article my trainer gave me. That's where you need your protein, good carbs and fat.
When I first started exercising, I didn't eat before, and I found myself flagging (even though I didn't do as much exercise as I do now). Once I started eating a little bit, I had much more energy to put into my workout.
The only thing I usually have before my morning Curves workout is a skim milk latte. Then, after my workout, I go home and have a nice bowl of oatmeal and fruit (or something similarly filling).
I don't feel good working out with a full stomach. Makes me sluggish.
