New and Looking for some advise

  • Hello Every1!

I'm back on this rollercoaster ride again, and needing some advise. Ok here's my story...
Before my last child (which was 7 yrs ago), it was pretty easy for me to lose weight.
After trying to lose the weight from my last child and not being able to I decided to have some tests run, and in the process I got really sick, and had to be admitted into the hospital. The doctor said that my blood vessels around my right kidney had bursted and leaked bacteria into my blood stream. So, I was hooked up to an I.V. filled with an antibiotic for a week.
For the past five years I've been in and out of the doctor's office and hospital because of my health. At first I thought it was all in my head. So, I was referred to a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with bipolar disorder and (of course) he over medicated me. Well, I saw him for 5 months, and decided that enough was enough. I wasn't feeling any better and the drugs just made me even more fatigued and depressed so, I stopped seeing him and taking the meds.
After being so persistant about my health and an ultrasound on my throat my new doctor found that I had hypothyroidism (can cause depression, difficulty in weight loss, fatigue, etc...). It's was a big relief (not saying it's great to have this) but I found the correct diagnoses for my symptoms. I started to take 50 mcg of synthroid and felt a little better after a couple of weeks, but I noticed the pain in my right kidney was coming back, and the fatigue as well.
I scheduled another appointment, and had some blood work. The results came back, and they said I was healthy and nothing was wrong.
Well, after numerous visits to the doctor due to a "bladder infection" (which I seriously doubted). They finally did an ultrasound on my abdomen, and found a 2"x3" cancerous tumor on my right kidney. I was admitted into the hospital last summer (June 2005) to have my right kidney and a few lymphnods (that the cancer had spread to) removed.
After my recovery (3 months) my oncologist called and told me that I didn't have kidney cancer, but a rare form that usually developes in the intestines or lungs, but some how found it's way to my kidney. She wanted to start radiation and chemo right away!
It's been a long road, but I am in remission. My last chemo treatment was in March 2006, and I feel like my old self again, except for the hot flashes and no menstral cycle (woohoo! the only good thing about menopause). I've been thrown into early menopause (and I'm only 32) due to the chemo.
I started to exercise and eat healthy again at the beginning of this month (May). It is now the 22nd and I've gained 10 pounds. Maybe it's the extra hormones that I'm taking plus the hypothyroid that's causing the gain? Any advise? Does someone know of anyone who may have gone through a similar situation, and lost weight? I'm at 186 lbs and wanting to lose 40 lbs.

    Please help!

  • Wow, what a story! I am so sorry that you had to go through all that!
I have hypothyroid and I am also on synthroid. To begin with it was hard for me to just maintain my weight (like 3 yrs almost) but once my body figured out that I was getting rid of this weight no matter what, it started cooperating.
I know that you have to work out a little harder or a little longer than some othes because your matabolism (sp) is shot.
If I can do it so can you!! Good luck and I am here if you need someone.
  • Wow, you've been through so much! Can't say that I've been through all that but I am hypo-thyroid. When was the last time you had your thyroid checked? It seems that my dosage is changing all the time. I've been on as little as 50 mcg of meds and I'm now up to 225mcg of medication.

As far as thryoid problems and weight.... If your thyroid is not under control, it can cause weight problems. However if you have it under control, it is not impossible to lose weight. Is it harder? Not sure, how does one compare? Also, do the hormones you take cause weight fluctuations? I really don't know anything about that.

It's great that you are eating healthier now and exercising. Definitely keep it up! Sometimes it can take a while for the scale to move. You might also be adding some muscle to your body. It wouldn't account for 10 pounds but it could be a part it.

I would consider talking to your doctor with all you have going on. See if they have any suggestions, make sure your thyroid is doing fine and keep up your new healthier routine. Hopefully you'll see a change for the better soon.

    Good luck!
  • Thank you guys for your advise. I'll have my levels checked. By the way do you know a good exersise to firm up your back?
