Red face Eggs and Cholesterol -- Yikes!

Okay, this morning I decide to have eggs for breakfast for a change. I used one whole egg and three egg whites. After adding in some reduced fat cheese and bacon bits, the total calories were 229 -- that's not bad and it was REALLY good. Then I decided to look at the nutrition report in BalanceLog on this meal. Yikes! I've almost hit my 100% for cholesterol. I looked at the values for just the egg and found out that ONE egg has 213 mg. The daily recommendation is 300 mg! To be honest, I've never paid attention to cholesterol but I did find out at the beginning of this month that I have high cholesterol (240). My doctor has me on Vytorin and I'll do the lab work again on Feb. 2. I guess it's egg white only omelettes from now on. (With a dash of yellow food coloring because I don't like the looks of just egg white eggs.) It just floors me that eggs have so much cholesterol. While my head hasn't been in the sand for the last 10-15 years, I guess I just didn't pay attention. It makes me think of those breakfasts that we used to have at Perkins.

It is frightening how much cholesterol eggs contain! I switched to egg substitutes like Egg Beaters a while back, they are really good for omellettes or scrambled. Taste almost as good as the real thing!

I'll have to buy Egg Beaters the next time I go grocery shopping. I've used them before but I think when we started on the South Beach Diet and ate eggs ALL of time, it was cheaper to buy the real thing. I honestly like the freedom of calorie counting so much more! (Although I did learn a lot about the differences in carbs.)

Thanks for the reminder on Egg Beaters!

You are welcome! I did forget how costly egg beaters are though, I only buy them occasionally. Not sure how much you pay in your area but at my local supermarket, Egg Beaters are almost $3 for a pack of 3 which is scandalous imo! If you eat a lot of eggs, that really adds up. Good thing I'm not a huge egg eater.

We've really moved away from eating eggs too. Now it is usually a once a month weekend kind of thing. I think the price of substitute eggs are high everywhere. At least the kind that are stored in the freezer probably last longer than the refrigerated stuff.

Just a quick note , cholesterol does not beget cholesterol. It is better to watch your entire fat intake, because your body produces the dangerous choleterol in your blood. HTH!

I was just about to say that the cholesterol in eggs does not significantly raise blood cholesterol.. I eat 2 or 3 eggs almost every day. But then I'm a nut!

Well that's good that eating cholesterol doesn't necessarily raise cholesterol. I've probably read that somewhere but pushed it to the back of the brain. (There's only so much room to remember stuff, so I have to be selective.)
