Need Cooking 101 tutorial

  • Hey y'all,

I'm getting ready to fix the cauliflower faux mashed potatoes and realized that a lifetime of eating badly has left me deprived of basic cooking skills. How does one cook cauliflower in the microwave? Do you put in a little water so it steams? For how long? This is just humiliating. If I were a 22 year old newlywed, it might be considered "cute", but at 42 it's jiust UGLY!

    Thanks!

  • Leslie, this really is incredible ! I dont have an answer to your question, but I just came back to the computer to post virtually the same type of message.

I've been serving ready meals (UK word - Americans call them TV dinners I think?) for the last 17 years of my life, and I've forgotten how to cook
I'm 43 and reading a recipe that said "diced mushrooms" completely threw me!

I was hoping to ask the others here if they can recommend any great (basic) cooking tips sites - SBD is already proving to me that I've lost all my kitchen skills.

    Any suggestions anyone?
ps Leslie, I'm 43 if it makes you feel any better
  • Cooking 101 - Cooking veggies in the Microwave:

Do you have a manual that came with your microwave? I seldom use mine for cooking but think that you would cook cauliflower by doing the following:

Cut the head into florets. Put in a micro-safe dish. Add 2 T. water. Cover with wax paper or plastic wrap. Zap at medium or high (depends on your wattage) for about three minutes. Test with a sharp knife. If not soft, continue to zap a minute at a time until it is.

    I hope this helps.

  • I'm 44 and don't use the microwave to cook. I steam my veggies in a steamer. Oh and I worked as a cook at a seafood restaurant for years. You're not alone.

  • Thanks!!!
Thank you! I'm sure there will by many stupid questions to follow.

I'm off to create fake potatoes!

  • The only stupid question is the one that is not asked!
  • Ruth is right, there is no stupid questions. Please ask away.

Somebody will know the answer eventually.

  • Mission accomplished
The faux mashed potatoes are completed. They turned out pretty good. DH likes them. Now if I can keep him outta them until the rest of dinner is cooked!

    Thanks again chickies!
