Help on Exercise Routine?

  • Hi guys! I'm 19, and am 165lbs. I've always been a chubby kid ever since puberty, but now I'm overweight and I really need help. I don't eat junk food, but we do eat rice a lot.

I've always been on a "diet". I've tried Totalife, Herbalife, NuSkin TR90, and I've even tried the traditional Chinese 3-day detox fasting. Only the fasting seems to work.

I never use to work out. Only recently, I've started dance aerobics which I do three times a week for an hour each. I'm a newbie and my stamina definitely needs building. I'm not financially stable enough to get a gym pass (super overpriced where I live) or equipment. Jogging outdoors is also out of the question as my country isn't very safe really.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any home exercises I should try that would help me lose weight?

Thank you so much in advance!
  • Leslie Sansone DVDs were a lifesaver for me when I was where you are (right down to the "not safe to exercise outdoors." I'm sorry to hear that, BTW.) She also has at least one book.

Are you on Pinterest? There are a lot of at-home exercise routines posted there that involve stuff like body weight strength training and plyo/cardio intervals (jumping jacks and stuff.) Let me know if you are and I'll give you my details - you can look at/follow my Fitness board because I have a bunch of those pinned.

Hi Violette! Thank you so much for the reply I googled Leslie Sansone and am really intrigued by "Walk At Home" haha. But I'll definitely check her DVDs and books out.

And yes! I am on Pinterest!

  • If you have good internet access at home, FitnessBlender is a good site for a lot of different exercise programs. I think there are pre-built programs and also tools to design your own program using their workouts. If stamina is your goal, you could concentrate on that. Personally I need to work on flexibility but hate yoga classes, so I use their stretching videos.

I've heard good things about 30 Day Shred, though I've only stuck with it a couple days before getting distracted! You may be able to find it on youtube if available, or you could of course order the DVDs. It uses small hand weights, but if you don't want to/can't purchase a light set of dumbbells you can use soup cans, full water bottles, or go without. It's a nice mix of cardio and resistance training.

You can always do body weight exercises at home as well. Push ups, sit ups, planks, squats, lunges, etc.

I don't like being in the gym, so I purchases a set of second hand weights to do heavy lifting at home. If you have any second hand sports equipment stores in your area, it might be worth checking out the prices. If out of your budget though, body weight exercises provide good resistance too.

The dance aerobics classes are great, I'm sure! Even if you don't feel like you have much stamina now, through time I'm sure it will increase if you keep going and as you lose weight it will be easier as well. I take dance classes for about 6 hours every week and absolutely love it!

Fitness is an excellent goal and I encourage you to keep at it! But if you are looking for weight loss, diet is the most important component. Looks like the traditional commercial diets haven't worked well for you, so I recommend simple calorie counting and moderation (assuming this doesn't trigger any negative eating behaviors in you). There are several great calorie counting websites and applications to help you out. I recommend MyFitnessPal. It is a bit of a chore at first to search for the calories in everything you're eating and to weight and measure all your food, but through time it becomes easier as you build up a database of your most frequently chosen foods.
