Sardine ideas

  • I love sardines, BUT they get boring just eating them out of the tin...I am looking for some ideas for preparing Sardines......
  • Hi kerri22,

I searched the web and found these recipes for you. Some are above 20 carbs a day but if you look at the ingredients, you can easily remove some of the higher carb content ones and enjoy a good meal. They each give you all the carb content, at the end, when you scroll down.

Greek salad (get rid of chickpeas and lower the carbs)

This would be good for after Induction because of the artichokes

This looks great, get rid of the bread and serve on slices of cucumbers, or lettuce.

This website seems to have lots of ideas, as well.

Here is one for making burgers out of them (no bread, of course)

This next website has some good ideas, as well, but you have to get rid of some bad ingredients based on Atkins:

    "Recipes with Canned Sardines:

    • 7 Sardine Salad with Chickpeas & Feta: A Greek-inspired mix of warm sardines, crunchy cucumbers, chickpeas and briny feta.

    • 8 Beet & Sardine Salad from Gourmet: A quick pantry meal that uses jarred pickled beets, oil-packed sardines, and a bit of fresh dill.

    • 9 Sardine, Avocado & Radish Salad with Watercress from Food52: Whole canned sardines are mixed with avocado, radish and watercress for a salad full of complementary textures and flavors.

    • 10 Pantry Puttanesca with Sardines from Poor Girl Gourmet: An easy weeknight pasta dish made with canned sardines.
For this one, you could use zucchini pasta, where you grate the zucchini in long, thin strands.

    • 12 Sardine Spread from Bon Appetit: So easy and adaptable."
I just copied and pasted except for the bold stuff.

    Hope this helps
  • Wow
I am so excited, thanks so very much.....
  • My pleasure, kerri22!
    Have a great day!
  • If you have an asian grocery store near you, you can buy sardines and mackerel in all sorts of different sauces. Often they're in small pull-tab 6-oz cans (like tomato paste comes in).

Sauces like - chili, tomato, mustars, tom yum, various curries....

You still eat them straight out of the can, or you can serve over rice (you can heat the sardines too if you want).

I'd bet youtube has some video recipes.
  • uummmm different sauces and rice? sounds like a slippery slope.

I didn't realize this was an Atkins thread when I posted. So no rice, but if you read the can labels, many of the sauced canned fishes are compatible with Atkins and other low-carb plans (I'm not on Atkins, but being diabetic, I do restrict carbs).

With the Asian canned fishes, you do have to read labels carefully though, because some of the sauces with very similar or even identical names in a different fish or a different brand can have very different carb counts.

I love the curries and chilli sauces, but have to read the labels every time I shop because the calorie and carb discrepancies can be huge.
  • Thanks so much for all the idea's....
Thanks for the WILL POWER DUST....I sure need it...
  • I eat a lot of sardines. But I also eat a lot of other fish as well (a lot of it in cans).

Why not try: anchovies, mackerel, salmon, mussels, squid, octopus, cod, trout, sturgeon, tuna, cockles, oysters, eel, lobster, crab, shrimp...

The list is endless and so good for you too.
