Decided to stand all of my shift at work yesterday and today

  • And boy are my legs sore tonight!!

Is it possible at standing ALONE makes this much different. I mean, myfitnesspal
Does say I burn 300 calories an hour standing but I find that hard to believe. Live string says you burn 1000 calories if you work an 8 hour shift in service (I work at booster juice so that counts as service) but really?! Wowza. I ess that explains my ravenous hunger too...
  • I work in the "service" industry too (at Starbucks) and definitely know what you mean by having sore legs. I imagine it probably does burn more calories when you're standing and moving without rest for 8 hours (as opposed to a desk job), but I wouldn't consider it a form of exercise or anything.

I would just consider them "bonus" burned calories and not let them effect your food intake, but that might just be me.
  • Isn't there nothing better than sitting down after a long day? I once did a 14 hour shift and a 13 hour shift the following day. My feet were killing me towards the end of each day. I don't know about 1,000 but I think you'd certainly burn a couple of hundred since you would running around for hours.
  • I work as a waitress, so I am always walking around, lifting and carrying things for 8+ hours on a shift. I agree with EricAnn that while I'm glad I have a job which lets me move around, I don't consider it actual exercise. After all of these years, my body has become used to those long shifts, and now I don't lose weight at all if I just work and don't exercise beforehand.

I'll be honest, when I was bigger, my feet and knees used to hurt after a long shift, but now I have no body aches or physical exhaustion by the end. Mental exhaustion after dealing with crazy guests all day, though, that's another story!
  • I also wait tables and let me tell you I worked til the very end with all 3 of my pregnancies, it didn't keep me from needing to lose weight. I run my *** off almost every shift and eat relatively healthy every day. Maybe my body is just used to it after almost 12 years. On a super positive note GOOD for YOU for making healthier changes to your routine woohoo!! Bring on the motivation!!
