Stepping on the scale!

  • At times when I get on the scale and I noticed I haven't lost any weight or gain a pound or two. It makes me really stressed out. Have anyone experienced what I am talking about?
  • I randomly weigh myself during the week (my "recording" weight day is Monday morning) and sometimes the scale shows no change or a gain. I get so upset and then mad at myself for even looking. But miraculously, by Monday morning the scale moves downward!

Try not to get frustrated; as long as you are eating right and exercising, the scale will reward us!
  • Weight fluctuates each day for different reasons. One day you could 140lbs the next day you could be 143lbs or 138lbs. I'm sure you'll find that this is a very common among other members. I don't weight in daily - I weigh in every two weeks officially with odd times during those two weeks. If I could make a recommendation to you it would be to start making measurements. I do them monthly and even if I don't lose on the scales, I might have lost inches. It's a great motivator to keep on going know that you are still doing some good to your health and lifestyle.
  • If getting on the scale stresses you out, then stay off the scale. Get rid of it! Throw it out the window!!

There are other ways to measure your progress, or lack of it. Use a tape measure, or just recognize how good you feel when you eat the healthier foods.

Don't let a scale rule your life!
  • I think we all have that experience. Just watch the long term trend to see how you're doing. Keep a chart and only "count" what it says once a week or even on the 1st and 15th of the month, perhaps. It's less frustrating that trying to justify every single day's fluctuations.

I need to throw the scale out like right now....lol
  • It could be that you are gaining muscle if you are exercising a lot.
  • I combat scale fluctuation stress opposite the way most recommend: I step on mine all the time, but I use a withings wifi scale that records it every single time and generates a trend line through the noise. This has helped me get over concern with the fluctuations because the trend line tells the real tale.
  • I'll try to condense this but yes, I have had an awful relationship with the scale. I have been at a "pound standstill" for almost 4 months now although I have been consistently losing inches. I started Insanity in September and added a few pounds at the beginning. I had a full blown, worthy of a toddler meltdown. Yes, that bad much to my shame. I was plunging further into a depression about it and almost threw away losing 51 lbs over a piece of equipment and gave up. I let that darn thing get the best of me.

I had my husband lock the scale up so I can't obsess over it anymore. I am now only allowing myself to use the tape measure to physically measure my progress. I will get it out when I'm done with Insanity tomorrow to mark my final results (which at about 30 days in was only two pounds lost despite losing 11 inches at that point) but it's going to get put away again. I can't and won't let that thing beat me! LOL
  • I totally understand what you are saying. Seeing the numbers stay the same or go up plays with my mind. I'm trying not to weigh as often. That's easier said than done.
