Default Job Interview - now what ?

So, I've been with my current company for almost 19 years now. It's a very tiny (6 person) company that has worked very well for my lifestyle (raising kids, telecommuting, etc) while my kids were in elementary / high school. The woman who owns the company has been VERY flexible with all of us (we're all women with children of varying ages - mine are now the oldest) and has been very good to us all these years. I was even able to bring my job with me 6 years ago when we moved from the large city with all of our clients, to this small city where there are very few technical opportunities.

HOWEVER, she is nearing retirement age and none of us are willing to take over the day to day headaches that accompany what she does. Her kids are married and she has already bought a retirement home in the mountains.

My youngest just graduated HS and I am now totally bored working at home. I need to get out and see people. A job opportunity that I am perfect for has kind of just fallen in my lap - I joined Linked-In a few months ago, I only have a few contacts, but this one found me. It's probably the only job in my area that uses my expertise, it will provide a higher income (helpful with 2 kids in college) and some stability (whatever that is in these economic times) and more benefits for the next few years.

I passed the phone interview with flying colors and now have an in-person one next week. I know in my head that, if offered this makes the most sense for me and my family, but I HATE, HATE, HATE leaving my friends - and they are all friends - in my current company and with a few projects yet to be completed that they need me on.

But I don't think I can afford to wait for the company to come to its eventual natural end, which is probably 1 - 2 years.

Any words of wisdom ?

I would just explain to your boss the situation that you are in and tell her that you have an amazing opportunity at your door. If she's been so good to you in the past, she'll probably understand. Maybe you could also add that you'd be willing to continue working for her on an "as needed" basis for those upcoming projects, as long as they didn't interfere with your new job.

If she is a professional she will understand you can't wait for the uncertainty of this job ending before begining to look for a new one. Especially now that you are in a location where jobs in your field are few and far between.

You all are right, we are professionals and should be able to work through this. I will absolutely offer to help finish up the projects (If I get the new job).

Thanks
