high protein & Constipation

  • Since starting a higher protein diet i find im constipated most of the time.
In order to go i have to take a laxative.
Feel like i have a brick in my belly today. I drink water but it doesnt seem to do the trick, some times caffeine does but not as much as it used to.
i bought a fibre supplement but its husks and its disgusting i just cant take it, tried eating extra veg in my meals , its driving me mad.

    Any advice?
  • Are you eating a lot of vegetables?

How about drinking some water with lemon?

    How about taking a walk?

All 3 of those can get things moving.
  • wouldnt say alot of veg, and ill try the lemon , i go to gym 4-5 times per week also , it never seems to get any better i need to eat high protein as im weight training , im losing weight and inches but the constipation drives me mad
  • You actually don't need a lot of protein for weight training. I've been doing weight training for years, usually between 50g to 100g of protein per day, usually closer to 50-60 but depends on the day. You can also get protein in other ways, leafy greens, beans/lentils, whole grains, etc. All those things have lots of fiber along with their protein and they can help move things along.
  • agree w/ nelie... increase your veg, fruit & water intake...
  • What about some fat? Do eat much oily fish/coconut oil? That can help a lot.. as long as it's good fat!
  • Yeah im only getting about that much protein 90g max id say.
I do eat quite alot of fish , think i need to eat more veg or make more soups to make sure am getting more fibre.
  • I would recommend you take some Glucomannan fiber capsules - I take 2 or 3 a day and things move like clockwork. You have to take each one with a full glass of water as they absorb so much water, but they do the job.

"Glucomannan is a sugar made from the root of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac). Glucommanan powder, capsules, and tablets are used as medicine.

Glucomannan is used for constipation, weight loss in adults and children, type 2 diabetes, blood sugar control, and lowering cholesterol.

Glucomannan works in the stomach and intestines by absorbing water to form a bulky fiber which treats constipation. It may also slow the absorption of sugar and cholesterol from the gut, helping to control sugar levels in diabetes, and reducing cholesterol levels."

    FIBER - goes without saying...

    But also...
    Magnesium. Magnesium. Magnesium.
Get off the laxatives! - it can be bad for you.

But you need magnesium to help move it all along.
I take 6-8 magnesium pills per day. If you choose to take them, you'll have to experiment with how many (you may need more or less, everybody's different.)

You can SAFELY take Milk of Magnesia every day, but talk to your doctor first.
  • I am thinking like LeilaJey. You may need more fat in your diet. You could add a few almonds or add a little oil to a salad.
  • The laxatives are probably making your problem worse - they clean out your intestines of all food, but also of the bacteria you need to digest your food.

Up your vegetable and fruit intake. Veggies contain fiber and fruit is a natural laxative. Also, make sure you're drinking plenty of water.
  • I only take a laxitive once per week if that , its not a daily thing.
Gona keep trying introducing the veg etc , but a bottle of lager done the trick
