Morning Workouts

  • Does anyone have any ideas on how to get up in the mornings? Mornings are the only time I can work out (I only have a 1/2 hour lunch - when I take a lunch - and evenings are jam-packed). I hate getting up in the mornings. I always have the best intentions, and normally can wake up 1 or 2 days, but then I start to slack and can't get myself out of bed. Any tricks anyone uses? I may try the alarm on the other side of the room thing, but I wanted to know if anyone had any tricks up their sleeves that help them get out of bed in the mornings? Thanks for the help!!
  • I don't have any- sorry. I'm the same way! I could use some tricks! I have an alarm on the other side of the room but I will literally get up in the middle of the night and turn it off. LOL
  • I put my alarm in another room altogether. I set my phone alarm really loud and plug it in to charge in my office. That way I have to get up to shut it off, and once I'm up, I usually stay up. It only takes a little while to get into the habit of getting up earlier.

I agree. The past few years I've been an evening person, but since I joined a gym last November I started going to 6 a.m. workouts (my only choice during the week). I now find myself routinely waking up naturally at 5:30 a.m.

Working from home, I also have the luxury of taking a nap during the day if I'm tired. This means I need less sleep at night and don't have as much trouble waking up early.

  • No tips...sorry. I set my phone alarm ...and i also go to bed earlier so i get enough sleep. it goes off at 5.30am and i am up and at the gym by 6.
  • Yes! My husband helped me, by putting a timer on the string of tiny white lights that I have in our bedroom window sheer drape..having those click on at about 5:15 a.m. really helps, that the room is not pitch black anymore.

He also put a timer on a small lamp in the bathroom. Having that light come on also helps banish the darkness.

ALSO i set my auto coffeemaker. When I smell the fragrance of coffee wafting upstairs, I want to go and get a cup when it's nice and fresh, I don't like it when it's sitting for more than 30 minutes

Yep. I woke up at 5:00 am on Saturday this week. NOT COOL, body! It's a trade-off, though, and it's better for me to get up early and get a workout in on the weekends anyway.
  • Yes, try the cell phone alarm across the room. If you know you'll hit snooze, set it for 20 minutes earlier. Do everything you can the night before- pack your gym bag, leave gym clothes next to your bed, set coffee/breakfast up if you plan on eating before your workout. Depending on your personality, you might try making a goal of doing it every day for a week to try and make a new habit. I let myself roll over and go back to bed once a week if I need to, but I don't want to waste that early in the week, so usually I can just push myself through. Once you're up and out of the house it's a breeze!

And you'll have more energy all day. It feels so good to do something good for yourself first thing in the morning and have it done! After doing this for a year I still wouldn't call myself a morning person, but I've gotten better.
  • I love the idea of putting lights on a timer!

I am another that puts my alarm out of reach so I have to actually get out of bed. Once I'm up for a few seconds, my sleepy brain can make more rational decisions like getting up instead of hitting snooze and sleeping longer.

I should add that I don't exercise in the morning, this is just my routine to get to work on time.

Ha, I didn't read your response before I wrote mine. I do the same thing! Sometimes I even wake up before my alarm goes off because it smells sooo good.

Ah, the amazing power of fresh coffee
