Ladies, Question concerning pelvic U/S

  • Hi ladies I was wondering if any of you at your heaviest had a pelvic Ultrasound? I was sent for one and the tech did it and after she asked me if I wanted a transvaginal one, I had never had any sort of U/S before so I asked how come and all she said was they give clearer images, I said no cus I was scared. she didnt say mine wasnt clear so I dont know why she would have asked?

I called my Dr's office to ask and they said if your heavier sometimes its harder to see things but she was going under my huge stomach, not over it?? Anyone else had experiences with any of this?
  • Also let me add this U/S was done for pelvic pressure I have been having, I am NOT pregnant
  • If you're not pregnant, you'll get better images transvaginally. They'd offer it whether you were heavy or not - the images are just better quality because they can get a better view of the internal organs that are lower down. The reason they do them over your abdomen when you're pregnant is that what they're looking at (the baby) is right under your abdomen.
  • Had it done many times. I have PCOS and sometimes they want to take a look at the cysts.

At my office, the nurses stick butterflies on the ceiling so there's something to look at. The room is kept dim so the ceiling lights don't fry your eyes. It's warm and cozy. They step out, and you get this paper gown thing top and a paper lap blanket thing.

I tend to wear T-shirt and bottoms so then I only have to take off the bottoms and use the blanket bit. I sit on the table. I tell them I'm allergic to latex. They put a non-latex condom-ish thing over the wand.

They insert into vagina and take pix. It reminds me a pap in a way. It's not uncomfortable to me... just kinda one of those things you do. Like the dentist.

After they give you wipes to tidy with and step out so you can do it. Then you get dressed and that's about it. You don't get results there, you see the doc for that at the followup. This is just pix taking.

    So that's the trasvag.

I've had pregnant belly ones too -- and it's about the same only they put lots of the gel on my stomach rather than on the slim wand for transvag ones. And they use a wider tool that reminds me of a small vacuum cleaner head because it flares outward rather than being a slimd wand shape. They press and rub it around the gel to try to take pix thru you. Not uncomfortable -- just one of those things. Then you still get wipes and tidy up.

One time I had a pregnancy 3D one and that was a different lab and I remember it was a different machine and I semi reclined rather than lay down but I can't remember the process.

None of it was scary. Everyone was kind about it. DH has come with before, other times not.

    HTH!

  • I have to get both a trans-vag and a outside ultrasound done every 6-8 months for fibroid tumors for the past 6 years. At my heaviest it was a little harder going. One of my ovaries is in a 'weird" spot and my uterus is tilted in a non-standard way, so they really have to angle the wand in a way that stretched out the opening in an uncomfortable way. It is easier now since I guess there is less fat to move around?

In any case, it never really hurt, and the technicians are very respectful - they know that this is an uncomfortable process for you. It will help them get a better view of things which is better for your health in the long run. Astrophe's experience is pretty much identical to my own, so I would guess that you would also have a similar experience.

    good luck!
