Sunflower seeds?

  • Since forever I have been addicted to flavored sunflower seeds! The calories for almost half the bag (there are 2.5 servings in one bag) are 170, with 14 grams of fat, 1.5 saturated. 7 grams of protein. One of the reasons that I love this snack (other than the taste) is that is takes me a few HOURS to get through a serving, and that constant crunching is great for my desire to eat all the time! I mean, what else can you snack on for an hour or more with only 170 cals??? But for some reason I have it in my head that this is a bad food, I guess b/c of the fat. I also thought they had a huge sodium content (and I love love love salty foods so eat way too much of it already), but I looked and it's 90 mg which really isn't that bad. So!

Do you think it's a healthy snack or one I should try to skip? What am I missing? I have one serving almost every night. My average fat grams (just guessing here) are about 20-35 grams a day.
  • The great thing about ccing is that you can build in foods that you do not want to give up. . If you were to cut the portion in half you would lose 1 lb every 6 weeks. If you were able to give them up and not replace them, you would lose 1lb every 21 days. If it is worth eating them to you, then eat them.

Have you ever tried sunbutter (sunflower seed butter like PB)? My favorite is the crunchy which has some whole sunflower seeds in it to make it crunchy.
  • The fat in sunflower seeds is quite good for us. It is rich in Omega-3's. Kinda like how nuts are good for us! Plus seeds are generally packed full of nutrients for their little size!!

The only thing to watch out for like you said is sodium. Which you can get unsalted ones. Also just make sure you are watching your fat intake as well.
Otherwise, it is a good and healthy snack! Better than chips any day!!
