Default Hello all, some UK questions

I'm moving from the US to Nottingham in about two weeks where I'll be studying for a year...

I was wondering, where would I get a scale that has both kilos and pounds? Or only pounds? (It's my understanding that in the UK the default for scales would be kilos).

I've heard some store names like Marks & Spencer, John Lewis. Is one of these, or any other place, THE place to go to get a cheap but good scale?

Thanks!

Ditto. Mine is the weight watchers silver one - just under £20 and comes with a 10 year guarantee.

Hey! I'm from Canada and I've been living in the UK for the past 4 years A lot of things aren't as different as you might expect, but then some things are CRAZY different (in a good way). I have a scale that does kilos, lbs, and stones and it's from ASDA. I think I paid £7 for it or something, and about a month after getting it it suddenly stopped working, so I took it back and they were really good about getting me a new one. It's just a plain white plastic digital scale and I'm not sure how accurate it is really, but provided the number goes down I'm not too fussed!

ASDA is a great place to buy cheap home things, and food too. M&S and John Lewis are big department stores and as already has been mentioned, they are a bit expensive for things like that, but M&S has the best bras ever so if you need any while you're out here, stock up! Argos is a catalogue store, so you go in or go online and look at the catalogue and then order stuff and they bring it out to you when you're at the shop. So you can't actually see the things before you buy them. That said, they have a great return policy and a lot of good deals.

Best of luck with the move! Enjoy Nottingham! I've not been there but I'm not too far away (in North American standards) in Cambridge. I've also lived in Southampton and Bournemouth and would recommend both if you spend any time down south.

Tesco online, Argos, ASDA, sometimes Lidl or Aldi has them on offer... but, I got mine from Argos for under £20 about 7 years ago and it is still working fine.
Good luck with your studies!

I got mine in my local pharmacy and it does lbs, stones and kilos...most do. I'm sure you won't have a problem finding one that works for you.

I know most Americans believe we work by the metric system like most other Euroean countries, but unfortunately (or fortunately) we're a little behind the times still. All our sign posts are in Miles distance and we ask for "pints" in the pub. Though we do weigh most foods in Kilos these days, weight for people is generally still in lbs and stones (14lbs).
You'll get the hang of our crazy unit system soon enough. Welcome to Blighty!
