wow never heard of it- it sounds pretty great. but - i do wonder about the pain of insertion. maybe i want anesthesia. lol. would also be interested in hearing feedback on this.
I'm just keeping this bumped up to the top in hopes that someone will post about their experience. The Essure is interesting, but I don't know anyone in real life who has had it done, so I'd love to hear more about it.
I've still got about 6 years left on my IUD, but when that's up, either my husband or I will be doing something permanent.
Mayness, My hubby said, "If they are giving away thousand-dollar-bills at the vasectomy clinic, I'M NOT GOING!!!" I'm 41. It's time for something other than a daily birth control pill.
Essure is a set of 2 coils that are placed in the fallopian tubes that scar over and cause tubal sterilization. I have not personally had it done or been present for placement, but I can tell you a little bit.
It is usually an outpatient procedure. Hormonal birth control is required by our docs before placement to thin the uterine lining and then also for 4 months after placement to prevent pregnancy while the scarring occurs. It is vital to have a follow up visit where dye is placed in the uterus to make certain it doesn't pass the blockage. The effectiveness rate is high and our docs are encouraging this method of sterilization for obese women over the traditional procedure.
Thank you for the information, Midwife. Do you know the recovery time? I had a c-section. Will my not having had a vaginal birth make placement more difficult?
Hello,
The placement is through the cervix so if you ever dilated (even a little bit) before your c/section, that is helpful. Some women's cervical openings are very tiny and some docs might give misoprostol the night before to soften it and allow it to open a bit for the procedure.
Sometimes it is done with what's known as conscious sedation so you might be sleepy and not recall anything (and you'll need to be driven home by someone). Some docs will use local anesthetic in the office and you might feel a bit crampy after but not too bad.
