I eat sashimi regularly -- just fish! (with low sodium soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi). Since it doesn't include rice, then it's low calorie, low fat, and excellent protein. yum!
I tend to go for sashimi over sushi; lucky for me, I've never really been a big rice eater... (made it kind of tough when I lived in Japan, though, so I learned to eat it willingly)
I just can't give up the feel of biting through the seaweed into the rice and then into the goodies in the center. It's a total texture addiction for me. I have been getting brown rice sushi when I can. I actually get cravings for the texture of brown rice now too. The white stuff seems like paste and even basamiti rice seems plastic-y to me now. A little layer of brown rice under the seaweed though... uhuhuhuhuh... it's just HEAVEN for me.

MMMM I totally agree! I've taken to making it myself so I can control the ingredients. My kids love it too. The baby will munch away at the seaweed wrappers LOL. Brown rice is yum.
I still eat Sushi! That is one thing I will not give up! Just steer clear of any maki (rolls) or sushi with deep fried ingredients. I like the Salmon and Avocado rolls! Yum!
I've never thought of sushi as a "problem" food, but maybe it's because I always get veggie sushi? Carrots, avocado, cucumber, a small bit of rice, seaweed... it's one of the best choices I can make for lunch, usually only 200-300 calories. I do have to be careful about the sodium in the soy sauce, but that's the only thing I worry about with it. A to-go box of veggie sushi and a fruit salad, yum!
I limit myself to grocery store sushi just becuase they have the nutritional information on it. One of the chains near my house actually does a low calorie version of several of their rolls with twice the veggies and half the rice. You still get enough rice for the texture and its still tasty.
I tend to go hog wild with sushi. It is just so darn good! Lately I can order sashimi only and have maybe 2 or 3 pieces of hubbie's rolls. That way I can control myself and still have a wonderful meal.
