Atkins / Dining Out

  • For those of you who are on Atkins (and on Induction) and who don't always eat at home:

    1. Where / what do you eat at dine in restaurants?

    2. Where / what do you order at fast food restaurants?

I've been preparing most of my foods, but it isn't reasonable to think I'll be a hermit forever; eating my high protein low carb in a dark corner of my house and never go to a restaurant again!
  • One of my favorite restaurants is Cracker Barrel. They have a low carb menu and their smothered chicken tenderloins with a side of green beans and a salad with ranch is delish!!
Another of my favorites is Carrabba's, their chicken bryan is to die for! I usually get that with a salad & their veggie of the day (their broccoli or asparagus is excellent).
Red Lobster has great broiled (non-breaded) seafood, salad & steamed veggies...just be sure to stay away from the cheddar bay biscuits
As far as fast food restaurants...I don't frequent them very often but, I love an occasional Wendy's baconator, no bun of course, no ketchup and a side salad with ranch dressing, no croutons.
Eating at restaurants isn't difficult on Atkins

I'm still afriad to go out. I did go once to Perkins and had steak, scrambled eggs and broccoli! LOL But I am afraid of the hidden stuff. I DO love Carraba's Chicken Bryan .. of course I pair it with fetuccini, which I don't think the good Dr. had in mind. And their freshly baked bread .. sweet Jesus!! Ok .. no Carraba's for me ... I shall try Cracker Barrel!
  • See, y'all are brave. I am totally afraid to walk into Cracker Barrel because my most favorite thing on earth is their country fried steak dinner. No CB for me.

I love eating out and almost any nice restaurant can do a much better steak than I can at home. Since I am staying on induction level, anywhere I go I generally will order steak or baked/roasted chicken with a side of steamed green vegetables and a side of salad (just lettuce). In diners I generally do steak & eggs with a side of lettuce. And fast food, cheeseburger plain, sometimes with bacon, and I remove the bun. In my opinion Burger King's the best, Checkers second. I've never been a big fan of Wendy's or McDonald's but they're OK.

Having been off and on Atkins since 1999, in general I've found restaurant eating to be very easy on the low-carb lifestyle.
  • I'm off out later for hubby's birthday meal. We're going to a restaurant that specialises in ribs, so I'm going to ask if they'll do some for me without any sauce. If not, it'll be a steak and salad for me.
  • You really have to read those menus closely. I took my DMIL our for "lunch" at the IHOP. They put pancake batter in their omlets! HAHAHAHA! So I ordered my without and the waitress apologized because it 'looked small'....I was stuffed!
It doesn't hurt to nicely ask, after all, you are paying for it.
  • I am just starting so I'm in induction. I'm also a terrible plan-aheader (like that word?!) so I hit fast food joints more than I like to admit. For breakfast, I've been having McDonald's sausage mcmuffin with egg and not eating the bread. It's really tasty and oddly enough, fills me up more than if I eat the same thing *with* the bread.

I've been doing good bringing lunch to work but forgot this morning. So I went to Burger King and got their bacon sandwich (forget the name) and had it w/o the bread. Almost all of the sauce stayed on the bread so that was good.
