For The Atkins Newbies

  • I've recently noticed several newbies to the Atkins forum, first let me say
There seems to be some confusion regarding the book & the Atkins website. Basically, since Dr. Atkins demise in 2003...Atkins Nutritionals Inc. has taken over and things have changed considerably.
If any of you have visited the Atkins website, you will immediately notice Atkins products (shakes & bars) being strongly marketed. If you read the labels on these products, it states they are suitable for Induction. This is very unfortunate because if you read the ingredients on both those Atkins shakes & bars...neither are suitable for Induction. Milk, Soy, Peanuts....ummm, not one of those are on any acceptable foods list I've ever seen.
The Atkins bars are advertised as 2 or 3 net carbs...but...if you research the listed nutritional information, those carb counts just don't add up I found an article that accurately explains the calculations...http://www.phlaunt.com/lowcarb/19059967.php
Many of you are confused about which Atkins book you should be reading. Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 or prior editions. For the original plan, you would use Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution 1972.
I can not stress enough the importance of reading the book cover to cover before you begin Atkins to fully understand how & why this plan works.
If you must refer to a website for Atkins information, I strongly suggest you avoid atkins.com and refer to Veronica Atkins (Dr. Atkins wife) website...http://www.veronicaatkinsfoundation.org/
Feel free to post often & ask lots of questions, this is a great place for advice, support & encouragement!
    You CAN do this!!
All the best to all of you!!!

  • Thanks for all the help Jersey! All us newbies can definetly learn from you!
  • Jerseygyrl. You also shared a link to lowcarb recipes (can't remember to whom you were writing) but I've tried a few of the induction ones and am quite pleased. Thanks again for sharing.

I'm making DBF the cocoa coated walnuts (using walnuts, almonds, pecans & cashews) for Valentine's Day I made them for him for Christmas & he really enjoyed them.
  • Thanks Jerseygirl,
I was thinking that too about the bars and drinks, so when I use one of their recipes I do carb calc myself...plus the drink gives me diarhia....yikes!
  • JersyGyrl, thank you for the link to Veronica Atkins' website. I had no idea that there was a difference! You are a fountain of knowledge!

    Thanks!
  • Thanks for the info on the bars. I have stalled this time around and couldn't understand why. After reading your post I realized I had added 2 atkins bars a day to my diet because the box says its now for Induction. I don't remember that the first time around. I hate the new atkins site. It' so full of contradictions from what I remember 4 years ago. Im sticking with the book now. Since Dr. Atkins died, the diet is about selling products, not helping people.
