Hey everyone- I was thinking about cheating on this day but now I am thinking I am just going to make a lot of yummy legal food to take with me on Thanksgiving!(We usually go to moms)
SO, whats on your thanksgiving menu? We can use this thread to post recipes to give each other great ideas to inspire us to stay OP this Thanksgiving!
I was thinking of trying to make a stuffing out of tvp and mushrooms and veggie sausage. A few years back I made stuffing out of veggie sausages and mushrooms and cauliflower and it was absolutely delish! SO, I am going to tinker with that again and hopefully come up with a good recipe!
I did SBD in March, 2003, when the book first came out. Reached my goal by Thanksgiving and decided to treat myself and just eat what I wanted. I was never able to get back on track and eventually gained the 35 lbs back.
Then I tried WW last year, and came back to the beach this September. I am really close to goal. I am not making the same mistake twice. I make the normal stuff but there is plenty I can eat and be just as happy. I make a crustless pumpkin pie. I also bake a sweet potato for myself. The rest of the family eats mashed potatoes and canned yams. I will make dressing for the family, but I have a great recipe using bulgur and turkey sausage that I will make for me.
I will also look for SBD friendly recipes and maybe make a few of those.
Ingredients:
• 4 onions, thinly sliced
• 2-4 tbs. olive oil
• 4 c. mushrooms
• salt and pepper
• 1/2 c. chicken broth
• 2 tbs. butter
• 2 lbs. sausage
• tarragon or sage
Directions:
Sautee onions in olive oil until carmelized. Turn up heat and add mushrooms. Sautee until crisp around edges. Season with salt and pepper. Turn heat on high and add broth. Let simmer 10 minutes. Add butter 1 tbs. at a time. Remove from heat and set aside. Brown sausage. Add mushroom mixture and tarragon or sage as you desire. Combine well. Bake like regular dressing.
Of course we will all make our SBD substitutions
I will prob only use 1 onion, crimini mushrooms, veggie sausage and for the special occasion a bit of butter to mix with olive oil.... and I will season with bells seasoning... but still the same gist
I was on the ellipitical at the Y today (while the kids were in the halloween party!), and was reading a "health" magazine. They had some great, healthy recipes in there! I'm going to have to go to the bookstore and get me a copy....
In the South Beach recipe section, there are threads where the names start with SBD Holiday... We posted Thanksgiving recipes several years ago. That's where my cranberry sauce made with Splenda is and I imagine I posted the homemade stuffing recipe that I use. It's basically a bread stuffing made with whole wheat bread and using Smart Balance instead of butter and stuff like that. I try to stay on plan as much as possible.

Reason: changed name for holiday recipe threads
I try to stay on plan as much as possible, too. In the past, I filled my plate with skinless turkey, baked sweet potato, roasted brussel sprouts and carrots, and broccoli. I make Barb's cranberry sauce to go along with the "real" thing. We usually have a big Harvest salad, too. My only splurge is a slice of pumpkin pie, but there's usually one made with Splenda and FF evaporated milk, and I don't eat the crust.
This year, since I've given up meat, I'm thinking of making a Quorn Turkey Breast for my GD and I, since she's a vegetarian, too.
Bulgur Stuffing
I can low sodium chicken broth
I cup bulgur
I small onion, diced
3 or 4 large mushrooms, chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped
2 T. olive oil
2 turkey sausage
sage
thyme
salt & pepper
I make the bulgur in the chicken broth and set aside. Saute onions and celery in oil. I remove the casing from the sausage and brown. Mix everything together and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.
I may try it this year with home baked whole wheat bread.
Cottage, I make a SBD friendly pumpkin pie and just eliminate the crust.
A couple things--while it's really great to put recipes in here, if we just post them in this thread, when the thread gets pushed to the next page, it'll become very hard for anyone to find these. So! Can you please post your recipe in the recipe forum and then provide a link to it here? If you need help learning how to do that, just PM me and I'd be glad to help you out.
Secondly, this is a great thread idea, which is why we have several threads like this in the forum. Here are some of them--please check them out for ideas before posting questions here. Thanks again!
General holiday advice:
What really changed for me at the holidays after SBD is eating a LOT more veggies...it makes a huge difference! I end up full and satisfied, but not overstuffed, gassy, bloated, and uncomfortable, like I was before SBD. It's a much more pleasant sensation now!
Plus, learning to focus on other parts of the holiday that don't have to do with food, like seeing famiily, going for a walk, playing pool, singing songs, playing games outside, like bocce, badminton, or volleyball (depending on your weather) is great, too!
Chickies, I've merged this thread with all the others we've had over the years on the November/December holidays and placed it in the FAQ. You'll find it here. It's open and waiting for your suggestions, questions, and discussion. Look forward to seeing you there!
