Hi

  • It's been awhile since I've been an active poster at 3FC, I was so excited when I found this forum. Earlier this year I was dx with PCOS and placed on Metformin, along with Zoloft for depression. I am also supposed to be on a "1600 calorie diet, consisting of whole wheat/grains, veggies, and lean meats". I'm struggling. First of all, I have a hard time taking the meds. I will do good taking one a day, but whenever I finally get twice a day, I end up forgetting and just quitting altogether. I can never make it to my 1500 mg dose. Needless to say, I'm not doing well on the diet either. I've tried the little daily pill boxes to remind me, but I'm still not good at taking it. It is so frustrating. I've never been good at taking meds. Any suggestions or helpful comments is greatly appreciated.

  • I used to be on metformin, and I would really recommend taking it every dose! It sometime curbed my appetite, but even when it didn't, it really helped with weight loss. I think the key to remembering is to associate it with something you do every day, without fail. For example, my bc pills are right next to my alarm clock. The kitchen is a good place for metformin...do you have a certain breakfast every day? Put it right next to the food, or right on the sink, counter, somewhere you'll see it. Its important you associate it with food every time, because after a while, you'll get stomach aches if you take it on an empty stomach.

    Good Luck!
  • Hi Kendra.
Did you try keeping a diary? Just logging everything you eat, exercise and meds down? I personally found it quite useful and I actually (until recently) logged everything I ate and whatever I did as exercise. It keeps me on track and if something goes wrong I can always look back into my diary for inspiration
    Good luck!
  • Hi Kendra!

Some great resources for PCOSers is soulcysters . com and a great resource for information on insulin resistance is livinlavidalowcarb . com/blog/

Metformin can be a great help in many ways for PCOS. It helps with the hormonal balance that screws us up - hair loss in the wrong places/hair growth in the wrong places - painful cycles - insulin resistance, etc. etc. etc.

I have also never been very good at remembering to take pills, but I am determined this time to get healthy, get rid of all these dreadful PCOS symptoms and to lose the weight for good, so it's been the motivation I need to remember. I have also done loads of research on insulin and how it affects our bodies. Jimmy Moore's site and the book by Gary Taubes, "Good Calories Bad Calories" inspired me to no end.

Learning all you can about PCOS and how our bodies process different kinds of calories may help your motivation in addition to the great support that can be found here.
  • Thanks ya'll.

I saw my doctor this week. She was very encouraging and stressed how important it is to get my diet and meds under control. So far, so good in taking my meds. The diet part, not so much. She also invited me to attend weight loss classes she is beginning in her office, that she will be participating in also. I am very excited about it. She has had a couple of PCOS patients lose weight on this same program. I'll keep you all updated on how it goes. I start the end of this month.
  • Hello! I am not sure if you spoke with your doctor about your metformin but I had a really hard time remembering. So she gave me an extended-release that is 750mg and I take 2. That way I get my full dose and I don't have to remember. It has helped. What kind of a diet is she suggesting? I have done the south beach thing and it got so hard. I have wieight watchers stuff and I am considerign it. Any suggestions you have would be great.
