I remember from college human biology the professor saying that the body uses energy (burns calories) to both heat and cool the body, but that both are done so efficiently that you can't "count" any calories burned from the process.
For myself, hot liquids make me feel less hungry. I think it's the hot=food association. But, they also make me sleepy, and I associate them with being sick. I used to have terrible sinus problems, and drank lots of hot liquids to help, but when I found that cayenne worked better than hot temperature, I started making cold cayenne lemonade (sounds terrible, and is a very weird experience, but it decongests better than prescription stuff).
