Finding the right clothes, or my first Lane Bryant experience

  • Recently I had my first experience in a plus size store, and I have decided that once I am done with college I will work for Lane Bryant- Not permanently, but I'm an art major so I don't anticipate getting a job right away- especially with Michigan's economy! I want to help women like myself, who love to buy clothes, but struggle for correct fit. At 5'2", a 40DD chest, and a size 18, I'm a pretty curvy gal for someone who's so short. This means, every time I go to a "normal" clothing store, such as JC Penney or Old Navy, I have to look in plus size clothes, and then when I find something to fit my hips or chest, I have to find a tailor to hem the pants and cinch the waist. Actually, since I'm a poor college student, I let the pants drag on the ground or pin them up with safety pins. I also have my own sewing machine, with which I often create my own disasters-- But if I always imagined getting them tailored- that counts for something, right?
Lane Bryant Right Fit jeans and pants. Amazing. I tried ordering two pair via the online store last summer, and I was so disappointed. That online "size calculator" is a bunch of B.S. You really need to make the drive to a store and have someone size you. If you live in Michigan and go to the Lane Bryant in Lansing, as I did, Rebecca will just look at you and say, "You're a yellow 4 petite!" and she will be right. Rebecca brought me these jeans, and when I tried them on, I swear I heard music. The waist and hips of the pants actually all touched my body! The butt was well defined, and neither too tight nor too loose! The length was absolutely perfect (unlike Old Navy's attempt at petite pants, which are 32 inch inseams- who are they kidding?!). If you are like me, you will be amazed, and make sure to splurge and buy a lot of clothes, not only for yourself, but to give Rebecca the Lane Bryant Salesperson the commission she deserves, because, damn- she's awesome.
I was so happy upon leaving that store that I cried. Not just because I got some pants that fit perfectly (and a jacket, and dress pants, etc...), but because I realized that that was the first time that I didn't feel bad about myself for being so big. My body image was altered in an instant. I stand a little taller (even at 5'2"!), I don't walk with my head down, and I actually like my body. The right fitting clothes make all the difference. If you've never shopped in a plus size store because you're "ashamed", or you're right in-between regular and plus size, you are missing out. Lane Bryant right fit goes down to a size 14. That's not plus size. It's like buying tailored pants without the price of tailoring!!!

So, the next time you try to squeeze into those pants and get a muffin top, or the saggy butt, or the tight thighs, too loose thighs, too short, too long, baggy waist on your back, etc, Check out Right fit- you will feel amazing!

  • I'm sized-out of Lane Bryant tops (which is unfortunate sometimes, since they do have some cute things -- I mean, I'm glad I'm able to shop in "regular" stores, but a few times I've tried on nice shirts in LB and were disappoint that they are too big), but I do still wear their jeans and I agree they're great for someone with a curvy figure (I have an hourglass shape and thus, big hips and it's so hard for me to find jeans at regular stores, even if they technically "fit").

Edit: I worked for LB for a summer, back when I was losing weight and a bit bigger than I am now. No commission at all, BUT you get a 44% discount on their merch. (unless that's changed, this was 4 years ago), which was pretty awesome.
  • I work part time at lb... it's not a bad gig. No commission though, sorry.
  • I Love the right fit jeans. I am an apple shape and they are the only jeans that will actually fit my butt and not make it look saggy. Not gunna lie i will be happy once i cant fit into a 14, but i will se sad because finding jeans will be a pain in the butt again. All the other plus size stores pants are WAY too big in the legs and butt fi they fit in the waist

Heehee, darn. I was hoping that Rebecca the salesgirl would get a nice bonus for being so awesome. Well, the thought of her commission helped to rationalize my 200 dollar shopping trip I guess, but I will make sure to tip that girl next time!

I will make sure to tip Rebecca the salesperson next time. I might even send her a christmas card, but that would probably be weird, since she helped me for, oh, about 10 minutes. :-)
  • Another thing that bugs the **** out of me is Old Navy's sorry attempt at creating Plus-size clothing. Have you seen that section on the website lately? OMG, those models cannot be over a size 12. That does NOT make me want to shop there. Also, they took the plus-size section out of the store, so we big girls won't have to show our sorry fat asses in their skinny-image store and eat the skinny girls when we get hungry from taking the time to step out from behind our computers! Once I went in there when I was a tiny bit smaller, and I tried on a dress in size large. It fit, except in the chest. I peeked my head out of the fitting room and asked miss skinny girl who was working the fitting room desk, and I said, "excuse me, miss, is there a big difference between a large and an extra large?" And do you KNOW what that B#*%(&$(*#$*(#$ SAID TO ME????

    "I wouldn't know."

WHAT? SERIOUSLY? DID YOU JUST SAY THAT?!

    yes, she did.

I dropped my ****, changed, and left. I have not been back. Had I not been in such shock, I would have said something to the manager, who was younger than me, but I doubt she would have cared.

I will never shop there again. I'm going to Lane Bryant to talk to some peeps who know about clothing sizes.

nawww we love that stuff. Just send a card into the store. They post them on a bulletin board in the back room, usually. It's great to see that we've helped someone and made them feel good. I'd address it right to the salesperson, so that way she's sure to see it!
  • Eddie Bauer has 'curved fit' jeans that are a size smaller in the waist than in the hips. That's the best money I've ever spent on jeans!
  • I also love Lane Bryant, when I can afford it. I really love Coldwater Creek Jeans. I bought my first pair a few months ago and LOVE them.
  • That Right Fit is a pretty ingenious idea. I am a size 4 red petite, soon to be 3 red petite. I tried on a few pairs and whether it's jeans or slacks, they all fit. The length is still a tad bit too long in slacks but I wear 1-2 inch heels. And it's nice to say "size four", though that's not a goal of mine in real sizes.

I am nervous to be losing weight and getting back down. Next size for me is 14/16 and when I was that size years ago, it was nerve-racking because LB clothes were too big, but it was very, very hard to find a 16 off the rack at the Gap or Eddie Bauer, etc that fit correctly. It's hard to be that "in between" size. Nervous especially now that I'm not a college kid and my clothes really need to fit well to be presentable for work.

I reached that stage, going up. I thought I had to lose weight just to fit into something, because I was in limbo between regular sizes and plus sizes.

Realizing that I had gained enough that it was no longer a problem (I needed the plus sizes) was one thing that helped me get started losing weight.
  • I posted in June about my experiences buying Right Fit jeans and being assisted by a very knowledgable assistant who took one look at me and said I was looking in the wrong section. I thought I'd be a red or blue fit and was actually a yellow 3 at the time. Turns out what I'd always mistaken as being 'wide-hips' was actually all behind.

    Here's to being bootylicious!
  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my LB jeans. I must say though, before they came out with the right fit jeans, I wouldn't buy LB jeans because they just didn't work.

I went into LB to find a dress and the lady asked me if I wanted to be sized. I reluctantly said ok and she handed me a pair. I could NOT believe what I felt. I was so happy!

And kitty, I'm with you. I will NOT go to Old Navy again. I walked in to the store cause I could fit into a 20 there. I asked the lady if they had any size 20 in a certain pair of pants. She looked at me like I was cursing her grave. She said "We don't carry those sizes anymore". THOSE SIZES??? ooook. Well F*&K You too. I was so mad! So I don't dare give them any money anymore.

I'm very glad that you found something you love!
