Grocery List?

  • Hello everyone,

I have just moved into a brand new place and it is my first time living ALL ALONE! That means I don't have to accommodate anyone but myself. And I don't have to worry about being tempted to cheat!

I want to get off to a healthy start, so what I need some help with, is if you have any ideas for what I should put on my first grocery list that is healthy and practical, please chip in. I need help! If you have any good recipes, please throw those in too.

  • My advice is to stick mainly to the outside areas of the super market(Freash fruit, vegitables, meats, cheeses, dairy etc. When you go into the isles with all the processed cr*p stick with whole grains (On breads you gotta be careful because whole wheat doens't mean whole grain!) I like items like brown rice oatmeal beans, lentils... Try to keep the food you eat as little processed as you can because those foods have the most fats, sugars, etc. that aren't good for you.
  • I'll let everyone else do the grocery list thing, but I'll give you a tip about saving money on your grocery list! Food prices have skyrocketted, as you will soon find out. What I do to stretch every dollar is the following:

Read the ads for the markets in my area. See what is on sale.

Make my menus for the following week off of the sale items as much as possible. This will also help expose you to try new things you may not have tried before. Try new fresh fruits, veggies, lean meats... etc

If something I find myself eating a lot of ie boneless skinless chicken breasts, canned beans, brown rice, frozen veggies.. etc. stock up on them when on sale.

Watch the ads.. did I say that before?

If you have a Trader Joe's in your area, not only do they have some unusual items in stock, but their prices are better than the grocery store on a lot of items and I find the produce fresher. If you dont have a Trader Joe's. check in your area for Farmer's markets.

Good recipe sites to use to make menus with all of your on sale items, aside from the one here at 3fc are www.allrecipes.com www.recipezaar.com Almost all of their recipes have full nutritional information. www.foodtv.com is also good, although the nutritional info is lacking on some recipes.

So take the ideas the others are giving you for what to eat, and watch those sales.. you can save a ton of $ Just think lean meats, fresh veggies and fruits, whole grains and good fats and low fat dairy and you'll do fine.
  • Garden burgers for the freezer
    Whole wheat buns
  • Have you ever seen the shopping list from hungrygirl.com???

I love that. I frequently only allow myself to buy things off of that list
  • Wow, thank you so much for your help everyone. I'm attacking the grocery tomorrow, this was all very useful and I have lots of great ideas.

I said it before, and I'll say it again:

    You guys rock!
