I was soo worried about my little guy - he is absoultely terrified of dentisits, but he had to go in for some pretty extensive dental surgery.
he's six years old, and his mind is very imaginative.
Yesterday we went at 6 am to the Children's hospital. He really didn't have a good idea why we were going. Once we checked in, we were asked to have him put on this hospital jammies and climb into a bed.
He knew right then and there what we were there for. I brought his gameboy for him to play to keep his mind off of what was going to happen.
They took his stats, and he would ask every nurse there... "are YOU going to pull my teeth out"? (he knew he needed extractions from a previous dental visit). Each one looked a little uncomfortable, but would tell him... "nope... not me".
One of the head nurses came in and told him that we would be moving his bed to the "sleepy room". He started getting nervous, but then the doctors there were wonderful. The Ansthesologist (sorry can't spell) explained that they would put a breather on his face and help him fall asleep (he called himself the "Sleepy doctor").
He allowed Christopher to choose a scent to put into the mask. He choose rootbeer. While we waited for the dentist to show up, he was showing the doctor his little teddy bear (it was probably about 6 inches big). The doctor bent over and told him... "I bet we can find a mask to fit your teddy"... Chris replies "I bet you can't" LOL.
So they found one that fit the bear fairly well, and he started to calm down.
The doctor was wonderful, he allowed us to stay there to hold his hand while they put him to sleep.
Well let me tell you, when they rolled him out, I felt like crying.
The procedure took about two hours. Once i was paged to go to his room, I ran up the stairs (Todd and grandparents were in line to get drinks and promised to meet me up in the room).
I met the doctor before I went in and he laughed telling me that all he can talk about is his new teeth (stainless steel caps).
So I walk in, and Chris - high as a jaybird sits right up, sticks his finger into his very swollen mouth and says "wom wook ack my neew keef".
Oh god I cracked up... along with other parents in the room! LOL
He sat there babbling as high as a kite with blood dripping out of his mouth compeltely oblivious to anything around him... poor kid.
Then he layed back down and fell asleep.
When we went to leave, they got him a wheel chair and he wanted to wheel himself around a bit.
I got a picture of him attempting to smile. Overall he didn't mind his experience
He went to Grandma's stay there for the week so I can go back to work. She called me a few hours later telling me that Chris was mad at me for forgetting to feed him breakfast before we left LOL (he couldn't of course because of the surgery).
He ate a whole package of lipton chicken noodle soup, then a package of Ichiban noodles a couple of hours later.
His apetite had improved so much even hours after the surgery compaired to a few weeks before!
Maybe his teeth were bothering him so much that he didn't want to eat.
Here's a pick of us leaving the hospital.
I'm very thankful for our Children's Hospital and all the wonderful staff
