Default I STILL haven't started my "diet".. how to get myself to start?

hey everyone,

I just wanted to ask if you know how i can motivate myslef to lose weight.
I really need to lose weight, but everything from being healthier, to looking much better, to the doctor telling me i need to lose weight has not gotten me to finally start losing...

i would start for a couple of days, and then go back to eating bad for another couple days. then the cycle just repeats over and over..

there's this bad voice in my head that always is stronger than my good voice. anybody have any suggestions as to what i can do??

thanks for your advice.

Seriously, the best thing I can say is to myself is "I'm just going to eat well today. Til the end of today, I'm going to eat well" and then hold yourself to it.

The way I started was literally just by thinking to myself "Why don't I just do it?" about going to the gym. It was really that simple. And then I started going, and I really liked it.

THEN the eating kicked in, because exercising is easier for me than eating right. So I did the same thing "Why don't I just do it??"

soooo....soontobehot....Why don't you just DO IT?

Why not start with baby steps? After all, small changes add up. For example. Are you a soda drinker? Start replacing most of your drinks with water. Take a water bottle to work & keep filling it up. It's a small start, but a healthy one. After two weeks, change another small thing... like walking a few minutes a day. After that? Make sure you're getting 5 servings of veggies & fruits a day.

Focus on what you're getting, not on what you aren't getting.

One thing you may want to do is make healthier versions of your favorite dishes. Like lasagna? Use lower fat cheeses, and load it up with veggies! You'll feel fuller from eating a veggie stuffed dish, but will have eaten less calories to feel as full.

Best of luck to you! You can do it. Just make your health your number one priority.

I agree with everything Faerie told you thats very good advice.
Or you can just jump right into it. Go clean your refrigerator and cabinets and pantry out get ride of all the junk food and replace everything healthy. Start walking tomorrow and keep it up until all the weight is gone.
Good luck. You can do this! *S*

I was the same way for awhile, never making it last more than a couple days and I...got mad. I said to myself "ENOUGH OF THIS ****!" I mean, anger was involved. I was fed up. I absolutely REFUSED to buy another size bigger, I REFUSED to live a life in which I avoid the mirror.

Everyone is different. You know yourself better than any of us. So you tell us. What's it gonna take? For me, it took anger and me screaming "No More!" I had a complete and utter NEED for a new sense of self, of life, of living.

Get mad, dude, get mad. And then start working out to vent and voila, 10 pounds gone.

I would say, either the "just do it" way, or baby steps. It all depends on your personality here. Baby steps can indeed help you ease into it--things like eating either butter or jam for breakfast instead of both, replacing some of your starch with vegetables at lunch, etc. Of course, this also depends on what has made you gain the weight first (some people will automatically start to lose by cutting out sodas because they were drinking too many of them in a day, but if you're drinking only one a week, it won't be as effective--although it will probably still be worth cutting down as well).

Don't think of it as a 'diet.' If you think you are going ON something it makes it that much easier to think of something that's going to end, whether that is next week or next month. You also start thinking, "oh, there goes my diet, oh well!" and before you know it, you're off the wagon.

Don't diet. Change your lifestyle. The baby steps another poster mentioned are great - but a LOT of it is mental and that has to start with you. Putting it off for another day won't help, giving up if you have a slice of pie or a peice of lasagna won't help.
Just have a smaller piece of pie and go for a walk afterwards

I have to agree with everyone else the best thing to do is to start small. You didn't develope your bad eating habits all in you day, there is no way you are going to lose them that way. Try changing one thing a week, maybe soda one week, then add more veggies, then reduce your sweets, ect.

Also don't think of it as a diet. Its a lifestyle change. If you "diet" lose the weight then go back to your old eating habits then you will gain all of the weight back.

Lastly plan in cheat days. When I first started I would alone one meal a week were I wouldnt count anything. Sometimes that would be a meal out with friends, so times it would just be me making deep fried chicken wings and french fries. That way I didn't feel like I am totally deprived. Now that I've been doing this for awhile I don't need those cheat days.

Good luck, and remember each day is a new day!

Yes it has to be a lifestyle change because after you lose it you have to keep it off and that will take change or it will come rite back.

Hi,
I think baby steps are the way to go. For me, when I get depressed or want to give up. I think of the positive things. Like how I passed on sugar in my coffee, and worked out today, and stopped eating when I was full (YEAH-not all the time, but those are the things I did today) and those little things make me feel better about myself and are small changes that are new and can help me lose weight. Did I do everything perfect today? No, by no means, but I try to think of reasons to be proud and keep going anyway.
