Default Value versus other supermarket food - a surprise!

Well who would have thought it??

In Yours magazine a few foods are tested - From Sainsbury's the basics apple pie versus the Taste the difference and the basics sausages versus Taste the difference ones. Not tested for taste but for fat, salt and sugar etc. The premiun apple pie had more saturated fat and twice as much sugar as the economy one. The taste the difference sausages had more fat and saturated fat and calories but sugar and salt were the same.

Tesco quiche value cheese and onion versus Organic - calories, salt and sugar the same but the organic one had more fat and saturated fat. The pate - value liver and bacon pat versus organic duck pate fat and calories the same but organic had more sugar.

Morrisons - Bettabuy (cheap) low fat strawberry yoghurt (in a 4 pack with other flavours) versus Organic 1 pot low fat strawberry - The Organic had double the total fat of the value one.

Mayonnaise The bettabuy had lower calories and fat and slightly higher sugar.

Only 3 shops were tested but it did surprise me - I thought the cheapie ones would be full of fat, salt and sugar to 'compensate;' using cheaper ingredients - looks like we have been paying more for fat!!!!! OK somme things are better to pay more for - cheapie baked beans are often watery but I have had some nice cheapie meals.

I refuse to let anybody else go shopping with me anymore because I feel like I am holding them up with all the time I take reading every label on every thing I pick up.

I found that the tescos extra light mayo has a bit less fat/calories than the helman's version and wasn't that much taste loss for me.

Yogurts are a big one for finding they are added with a ton of sugar. There are so many things in the 'healthy' supermarket ranges that have way more fat then I would consider eating these days or they have a lot of calories but call themselves low fat.

I guess the people buying the 'taste the difference' type things are looking for taste rather than health and I bet the fat and sugar helps with that. Just something I can't do these days (as much as I would really like to at times).
