What to drink (and not drink) this weekend. . .

  • To Drink or Not to Drink

    Five Drinks to Avoid
Daiquiri: With 4 ounces of mix and 1 ounce of liquor, a daiquiri weighs in at 305 calories -- almost all sugar! "A lot of these drinks are served in very large quantities (12 to 16 ounces)." Your 300-calorie drink can boast up to 800 calories.

Long Island Iced Tea: Using TGIFriday's mixer and a 12-ounce serving adds 520 calories to your daily intake.

Pina Colada or Margarita: A 5-ounce glass nets 245 calories. Super-size it to 10 ounces and it's 490 calories.

Mixers: Just 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits is 65 calories. Add 6 ounces of calorie-laden soda or syrups and you're well over the calorie count for a "light" drink.

Bartles & James Wine Cooler: This seemingly harmless sparkling concoction sports 230 calories per 12-ounce bottle. Not slimming.

    Five Drinks to Try
Mimosa (1:1 champagne and orange juice): At 130 calories, this traditional morning libation won't wreak havoc on your waistline. "And you'll get 100 percent of your vitamin C requirement from the orange juice."

Wine Spritzer: With 3 ounces of wine and 3 ounces of club soda, wine spritzers top out at about 60 calories and zero grams of fat.

Sangria: The combination of wine, fruit juice, club soda and fresh fruit makes for a low-cal, refreshing drink, about 80 calories.

Bloody Mary: A standard-size cocktail adds up to about 120 calories and you get a serving of vegetables to boot.

Wine: The typical 5-ounce glass weighs in at 125 calories. Opt for red and you'll get a healthy dose of disease-fighting chemicals called flavonols, too.
  • Drinking is always a popular thread here. (We're 20somthings what does anyone expect).

Another suggestion not listed is using spirits and dite mixers. For instance Jack and Diet Coke. Another thing I recently thought of was Aquafina has a new line of calorie free, flavored, carbonated water that would probable be good with vodka.

If you are drinking at home then there are some diet margarita mixers out there that calorie free. I haven't tired any yet but its a suggestion
  • gin and diet tonic with a lime twist... yum! also, bacardi razz with diet sprite!!!
  • Mmm rum and coke zero. I also enjoy a good jello shooter (or two or five ), which can either be terrible or not-so-bad depending on what type of jello and alcohol are used.
  • My fave is a vodka martini. It's about 200 calories, but it's a great slow-sipping drink and I can't drink more than two in a night. Well, unless I really want to cut loose.
  • Awesome drinkin' suggestions, ya'll. I may put some of them to use this weekend . (Just turned 21 last Saturday. The party continues...)

    good choices!

on a side note, i went to college in york. i think thats all people do there is drink. then stumble down to munchies for late night snacks. my biggest down fall 2 years ago was losing 30lbs over the summer only to have everyone back at the house wanting to go out drinking.

its easy to say youre not going to but when people are celebrating something new every other day and shoving shots down your throat it sucks a big one.
  • I really like dirty shirleys
I make them at home, use a splash of grenadine, diet sprite or sierra mist, and a shot of vodka... depending on the grenadine, its betwee 125 & 150 calories, I'd say!
