I was diagnosed in May "07 with IR and the dr. put me on a low carb.diet. I am working out daily now but seem to be having a hard time losing weight. I started swelling in the feet and have been back twice to the dr. and he keeps telling me I am doing the right things but try to cut down on the sodium. I am very frustrated with the whole thing. I even cut down on diet coke which is a miracle for me and I still have to watch my sodium. Anyone else have similiar problems?

I have had swelling in my feet, ankles, and hands. My dr said it was related to my blood pressure and not the IR. My BP wasn't even all that high to have swelling but according to her, since my body doesn't function normally, even a slight increase can cause symptoms. Some people might not see symptoms until their BP is really high but others may see it even if it is in the normal range but high for them.
Some things that I do to help:
* eat asparagus
* eat watermelon
* drink lots of tea and water
* limit sodium and processed foods
Thank you. I do have high blood pressure (under control from meds) and my dr. said the same thing. That my body isn't functioning properly and so any sodium is making it happen. I will try those foods. I do think processed food is a bad culprit. I am having difficulty losing weight too. Are you?
I have IR and take blood pressure med's. Excess sodium will definitely cause me to have a "water weight" gain. I drink lots of coffee, water and crystal lite. I also have found that watermelon is great to help shed excess water.
I suffered my first ever experience with foot swelling a month ago. I do not have high blood pressure at all. Since then, I have had a couple more occasions of swollen feet. I have also had a lot of pain in my feet, but I think that is a result of the weight I am carrying.
I have horrible swollen ankles and I've even reduced sodium at times and they still swell. I'm convinced it has something to do with pcos. I'm on spirolactone and it doesn't seem to help it.
Thanks for the replies...I agree about the swelling. It seems no matter how much I watch the sodium it makes my feet swell. The dr. didn't seem to be worried about it much but it does seem to keep me from losing any weight. I am so stuck and frustrated.

Kmtownsend: I am having trouble losing weight. I know that part of it is that I am eating too many carbs. Part of it is that I just can't find the time to do the amount of exercise that I probably need to do. And part of it is the dreaded hormones that make it harder. My insulin level was pretty high the last time it was tested so I know that it There are other things that can cause swelling too that I didn't mention before and I don't think anyone else mentioned.
Carbs are a big one. They can add to water weight gain because it takes more water to process them. Exercise can increase your water weight gain also after a good workout. Also, a long shot if it is a one time thing or occasional thing is sun burn and sometimes just long time sun exposure if you don't burn. Sounds odd I know but it is true.
I am no longer hypertensive since i've lost weight, and i'm off BP meds. I had a good quantity of chinese food a few weeks ago, the next day my lower legs and ankles were puffed and were staying puffed.....I decided to try Diosmin blend of flavinoids...(sold as circulation and vein support by HSN)..I don't know if this will solve the problem, but even after have 2-3 high sodium drinks (bloody-mary brunch), i don't have any ankle or foot swelling.
I've also been having my ankles/calves massaged a couple times a week with manual and a percussion massager....again, I don't know if this really "helps" but it feels great.
Oh my husband takes the Andrew Lessman vein and circulation I never thought of taking it. I'll have to start and see if it helps my swelling.
But I was actually trying the fat flush diet and posted about my swelling on the website and the author of the book Anne Louise Gettlemen said that carbs cause swelling. So I'm thinking I need to cut out carbs. I was trying You on a diet but it's not helping the swelling at all. And on Fat Flush you drink a cranberry cocktail that should help the swelling.But it's a hard diet to stick to.

Before i purchased it, I went online to the website and read a miriad of review that claimed it was the best thing since sliced bread....I was very skeptical but i'm also a natural born sucker.....and everytime i looked at my ankles i kept thinking how terrible they looked> I have spider veins everywhere, small but ugly....the hsn reviews, some people stated that their veins were decreasing in appearance, fading, etc...(i thought OH SURE, it's a miracle in a bottle).
OK, yesterday, I'm shaving my legs and applying moisturizer....i had to put on my glasses, and "if I'm lyin' I'm dyin", there is noticible improvement and much less purple....i only wish i had taken a pic with my phone to compare...i wasn't expecting this at all, but i truly did a double-take.
i take one in the AM and one in the PM, but the side effect (for me) is that when i take the evening dose I get sleepy? in the AM i don't notice that but I have a boatload of caffiene in my system to begin the day.
we'll see if I have the legs of a 20 year old in few weeks......i doubt it but it's nice not to feel the legs are too ugly to wear shorts, so i'll take all the positive feelings i can get.
