Default Ice Cream..??

A new stone cold creamery just opened up here. We just got back and they have a "sinless" ice cream and I had a small one. I measured the cup when I got home and it was 1/2 cup. My first ice cream in 3 months...Here are the ingredients
Other than the stuff I can't pronounce, does it seem to be SB ok?

The only two things that are pronouncable are skim milk and nonfat milk

This is off topic, but is there a difference between skim and nonfat milk?

It would be nice if they showed the nutritional values in addition to the ingredients. I recognize some of them... there are a couple of artificial sweeteners, a couple of thickeners and a preservative listed... I'm not a big fan of unpronouncable items, so IMHO I would only eat it as a very occassional sweet treat. It really doesn't meet the SB philosophy...

I looked it up and non fat milk contains less than 1/2 percent of milk fat.
And you are right...it would be only an occasional thing if everyone else in the family is going there for a treat. I am waiting to see if it sets me off on any cravings, but so far a couple of hours later, no. I drank a bottle of water after I got finished it too.

No cravings is good It's nice to have an option that's not too damaging if the whole family is going to have ice cream and 1/2 c is probably just about the right size.

I'd say that if your whole family is out for ice cream and you've got the choice to either sit there stewing that you're not getting any, or have a scoop of that kind and feel included and like you're not being deprived, then you're better off getting an occasional scoop of ice cream than carrying around the disappointment of having to sit and watch everyone else eat ice cream while you munch on celery. Depends on your mind-set. If you're fine not getting any at all, of course that's better. If you are really jonesing for something, too, then it's better than getting one of the regular kinds.

I read in the book that Dr. Agaston says he gets regular ice cream every once in awhile and then only takes two or three bites. Me, personally, I could never take just two bites of ice cream. That option wouldn't work for me, at least in this stage of my battle with self control!

That's my two cents on the matter!

P.S. I think it's funny that you carried the cup home to measure it!

femme, you didn't mention if it was good - I assume it was! If it was just so-so, I wouldn't bother with it, but if it was really yummy I might as a very occasional thing.

for an occasional treat - I think its just fine. Of course, I'm not sure I could go into a cold stone and not get something to mix in....hmmm, some kind of nut probably wouldn't be too bad.

I have to have something mixed in my ice cream. Then I dig it out with my spoon :P It's like hunting for buried treasure! I rarely eat all of the ice cream, just all of the little fixings inside.

That said, I found the world's most amazing ice cream the other day. It was soy, 110 calories per 1/2 cup, no added sugar (I forget what the sugar was... maybe 7 grams?), and 1 gram of fat. Considering that if I ever got it, I'd only take a 1/4 cup scoop and mix it with berries, I think it might be a good psuedo-indulgence eventually. I forget what it was called, but it was at the local coop grocery (affectionately known as the Socialist Grocery Store), so I might test it out eventually.

Ice cream is my weakness! It's not the sweetness, it's just the cold and mix of textures! I freeze grapes and berries and eat them frozen, but that doesn't have the same excitement to it as fishing out the "phishes" in Ben and Jerrys!
