Bouncing like crazy

  • It seems like my weight is bouncing around like crazy. Two days ago, the scale was saying 314, yesterday it was saying 318, now today it says 316. I know, I am weighing too often, but I have REALLY needed that kick in the arse to keep me going. I usually only weigh in once or twice a week. Is it normal for the numbers to fluctuate so much? I'm always weighing in with little to no clothing on, and mostly in the later part of the day.
  • I have had the same thing happen to me. Two tips I can think of right now for you...

    1) Always weigh yourself at the same time. I weigh myself when I wake up (after a trip to the potty) in my undies.

    2) The things you ate/didn't eat yesterday can temporarily affect your weight. I "gained" 2.5 pounds overnight and was sooo mad. Then I realized I'd had soy sauce on my stir-fry the night before. Soy is salty which equals water retention.

Are you tracking your weight on something like FitDay? Most sites have graphs which is nice. It looove watching the downhill slide. Don't let it get you down! The overall downward trend is what counts!
  • MarinePrincess gave you some great advice. Fitday and MyDailyPlate are awesome to really help keep track of what you are eating.

    That makes two of us
  • It is completely normal for weight to fluctuate day to day, often quite a bit. Remember the scale does not just weigh your fat, it weighs all of you!

Check out this great post for a good explanations of many of the factors that can affect your weight and make the scale go up and down!

  • At the beginning, I would force myself to stay away from the scale because I was so afraid that I would binge if I was unhappy with the results on the scale. I didn't want to get depressed and give up. Alternatively, if I saw a good result, I worried that I would tell myself it was okay to "cheat" a bit because I was doing so well. So, I resolved to wait. Within a few days, though, I began to worry that I would weigh myself at a "low" time, wait a week or two, then weigh myself at a "high" time, and become really depressed because I would think that I had just had two bad weeks. So, for about a week and a half, I weighed myself ALL OF THE TIME. I wanted to see how a meal would affect the scale, how exercise would affect it, if it would change in the time space directly after a meal to the beginning of the next meal, etc. That way, I wouldn't become so discouraged with small fluctuations. I'm really glad I did. I noticed that my weight almost always fluctuates by about two pounds throughout the day, and sometimes fluctuates by four or more in one day, especially if I'm drinking extra water. However, as MarinePrincess suggested, the best time to weigh may be just after waking and after using the restroom. That, for me, is almost always the lowest weight I'll get that day. Even if I fast for the entire day (which I do monthly for religious reasons), my weight will go up during the day. I'm not sure why, but knowing that helps prevent discouragement.

So - this is my long way of suggesting that you either do as MarinePrincess suggests and choose a time of day for weighing, or do what I did and familiarize the way that the scale fluctuates regardless of what you do. She also makes a good suggestion of charting your weights so that you can see trends. If you are downward sloping, that is encouraging even if you see a few blips. If you are not downward sloping after a few weeks, it may be time to take an honest appraisal of what you are doing and not doing and perhaps investigate a different weight loss approach.
  • I weigh myself and record it daily, but only "count" Mondays.
