If you want to hear something ridiculous...

  • ...then listen to this:

Since hearing about the CBS Sunday Morning show today regarding all the foods that have hidden sugar in them, I decided to look at the labels of all the foods I was cooking with today. I was making some chili and I used the Lawry's garlic pepper that we've had on the shelf forever. One of the first few ingredients is BROWN SUGAR!

Why in the do we need sugar in the pepper?!

  • That is ridiculous! I found some in my allspice the other day. Maybe that's normal for allspice, I don't know. But I knew my falafel tasted suspiciously sweet. Much anger ensued.

It makes me so mad because I shouldn't HAVE to check the label of spices when I (rightly) assume that it will just be spices in them. It's bad for those of us on a diet, but even worse for people with diabetes! My dad DRENCHES his food in spices and it scares me to think that some of it might have hidden sugars in them- because I know he'd never check the labels.
  • It makes you a lot more conscious of what you're putting into your body when you read labels! It's a good dieting tip, I think.

  • I happened to check the label on my carton of my SILK Light Vanilla Soy Milk that I like to add to my coffee and was surprised to find it contained Organic Evaporated Cane Juice and Sea Salt in the ingredients! Even the 8th Continent brand that I like contains sugar! I guess I'll go back to plain old skim!
  • Sneaky buggers, aren't they? Chili powder is another culprit. Adding sugar to stuff bulks it out and imcreases the profit. It's a frassin' conspiracy!
  • I started double checking labels when I began SB and couldn't find diced or whole tomatoes without added sugar or high fructose corn syrup. It's amazing what products have sugar in them. And they wonder why so many of America's children are suffering from obesity. Even when you try to make things from scratch companies find a way of getting sugar into your children.

The "light" means less calories and fat, not less sugar! The light plain Silk has less sugar but you can buy unsweetened instead!
  • The only place that carries unsweetened soy milk around here is MUCH too far to walk to with groceries. I wouldn't mind walking just for the soy milk but not an hour each way! Soy milk is iffy for me though- sometimes I get allergic skin reactions to it, sometimes I don't. Once in a very great while I'll use some regular to make a smoothie- and while there's a little bit of sugar, I haven't noticed it effecting my weight loss.
  • I had a similar rant on another board recently. I bought a fresh, out of the oven, rotisserie chicken from Costco. Happened to look at the ingredients - sugar! Its a whole darn chicken for crying out loud! Figured it was in the marinade and since I peeled the skin off anyway I was safe but still....

The other wacky thing I came across is that potatoes are listed as an ingredient in one of Trader Joe's pesto sauces....go figure.

Those Costco chickens are darn good though....

All flavored soy milks and even some plain soy milks contain sugar of some sort. The labels says unsweetened soymilk but then still read the label to make sure there is no sugar added. I've been on the lookout for a low fat, unsweetened soy milk but haven't been able to find it yet.

I recently bought a different brand of canned beans and they tasted really sweet, after checking the label found it had sugar as the 3nd ingredient after water and beans. I also bought a bag of frozen vegetables that had sugar added-it was one of those flavored ones that I don't usually buy.

  • The only unsweetened lowfat soy milk I have found is in Canada!
