Instant Irish-Cut Oatmeal?

  • Okay, so any 'instant' oatmeal would usually set my alarms to ringing, but this one is different--it's made by McCann's and is real oatmeal with the germ intact. It's SF...what do you Beachies think? Click Here (scroll down for the nut'l info)
  • Looks awesome to me
  • Hey, Laurie, funny you should bring this up, I've been using it since I discovered it! It sounds perfectly SBD friendly to me, and hasn't caused any cravings that I know of. Try the Cinnamon Roll one, YUM!
  • Wow! I saw this in the store yesterday and almost bought it. I was hesitant because the plan says no instant oatmeal, but it really looks like it would fit into our plan nicely! I'll have to go back and get some.
  • I saw this in the store the other day and wondered about it, too. Might have to pick it up next time!
  • I can't see how this is a good thing. it has artifical stuff in it.

i'll make my pot of steel cut oats every sunday and package it in single serving sizes in the fridge and throw it in the microwave for a minute to heat it up... add my nuts and milk and fruit and sweetner... better than any instant stuff around...
  • Well, Nessa....I'd like to be food purist...I do think that is a much healthier way of eating. And, I love my steel cut oatmeal. But, the reality is that life gets extremely hectic sometimes and I would be nice to have options....especially when I'm traveling.
  • when you travel how long are you gone?
  • Am I the only one who has a hard time with real whole oats? I don't need instant but definitely have hard time w/ the unprocessed type.
  • Quote: when you travel how long are you gone?
It really depends on where we're going. We do a lot of extended weekend trips and one or two week trips a year. We're leaving on a short weekend trip tomorrow morning and will return late Sunday evening.
  • I posted a really great recipe in phase 2 breakfasts for oatmeal bars. check them out.
  • Thanks, Nessa!
  • Great idea, Nessa! Thanks for being so great at supporting the whole foods/less processed foods nature of SBD.

Tifanicole, yes, some people have trouble with the oats. If so, you might try talking with your doctor just to make sure it isn't a health problem. Could it be gluten sensitivity? You might try other hot cereals, like Kamut, Millet, etc. and see if they affect you too?

I'm glad I'm not the only one eating this! The Cinnamon Roll one is delicious!

I agree about the whole oatmeal and I still make that too. But I like mine really thick and it takes a long time to heat it--about 12 mins in the micro. This takes about 5. I think it's kind of between instant oatmeal and whole oatmeal--it's not the powdered crap I ate as a kid, that's for sure!

I eat lots of things that have artificial stuff in them, but a LOT less than before I started SBD, with the exception of fake sweeteners....I eat much more of them than before, when I stuck with sugar, honey, etc.
  • I haven't seen these in the stores here, but they look like a good option to add to the breakfast rotation.

I just bought some steel-cut oats today to try out since I've heard so much about how good they taste. But I still have some of the regular old-fashioned rolled oats that I was wondering what to do with - since reading Nessa's oatmeal bar recipe, I have a good use for them!
