PCOS: Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Hey Ladies,

I have PCOS and I am finally at the stage where I need to pay more attention to my health such as eating habits and exercise. So far I have lost about 45-50lbs. I have been ill, so I had to take some time off from dieting per Dr's orders. Anyway, I am back and raring to go! I was thinking about the various plans I could try and I couldn’t think of anything that would appeal to me and work with my body chemistry (PCOS). I have ordered several books from the library on the subject and want to go back to my wholesome diet. I was eating natural foods like fruits, vegetables, low fat meat choices and etc..I lost 75 pounds this way before and I think I can do it again. Also, I have made an appointment with my Dr. so I can get check-up and go back on birth control. I will start back on Metformin, this week (500mg) I know! I know! I shouldn’t have gone off it in the first place!

    Here's my questions:

Are there any books you can recommend?

When is the best time you suggest for taking Metformin?

Did the birth control or Metformin work for you?

Lastly, Once you had a considerable amount of weight loss did your symptoms improve??

Answers to these questions or any other info you want to share is greatly appreciated!!

I thank you all so much!!
  • I'm following WW, but I do tend to stay away from bad carbs and instead focus on the good ones (whole wheats, etc).

Are you taking ER Metformin, or the regular kind? Will you be slowly upping your dosage? If you are taking ER, you might want to take it at night to minimize any discomforts you might encounter if you'd take it during the day. If you are taking the regular kind, and will be adding to it slowly, I'd just pick a time and stick with it.

Birth control made me gain 40 pounds. Metformin didn't help with my weight loss efforts despite dieting and exercise at the same time. I lost a lot in terms of inches, but the weight wouldn't budge. I've never taken the two at the same time.

At one point when I was about 21, I was down as low as 170. I still had cycles that weren't regular (my roommate actually reminded me of this as I couldn't remember - wasn't having sex, so I didn't care!). This was before my diagnosis, so I didn't know anything about PCOS or I'd have worked harder on not gaining the weight back.

    Good luck.
