Getting my 'high' from food

  • Hello everyone,

I have a problem with food.I call it my food addiction.I get high whenever I binge on large amount of food.I zone out and I am in my own little world.Food is taking up all my space in my life.I find that I tend to ignore my friends when I am on my binge episodes. My family is worried for me,they have to hide food from me because I eat it all before they get the chance to open it.I weight almost 300 pounds.Food takes over my life. This obsession is crazy.I'm wondering if anyone else has the same problem as me.
  • I am definitely a compulsive overeater, and can relate to the food "high." Carbs, especially "white" and processed carbs are my biggest trigger (not likely to binge on green beans, after all).

For me, TOM seems to be the most difficult time to avoid binging. I can hold it together 3 weeks out of 4, and then often undo all my hard work. At my next doctor's appointment, I will be discussing changing my birth control, and possibly even cycle suppression to see if that helps. My husband and I are also getting referrals to the Weight Management Clinic. They have programs ranging from nutritional counseling to WLS.

I think the largest barrier to weight loss for the food addict isn't the "addiction," itself but the frustration and pain after a binge that encourages us to quit trying, or worse sends us on an eating spree because "there's no hope anyway."

Knowing what your worst triggers are and keeping them out of the house, is usually a help. And a lot of people swear by eliminating all carbs but those in vegetables and fruit (some even limit fruits because they binge on them).

It's hard when you literally feel a "high" from binging, because it becomes a way to cope with stress, that's difficult to give up.
  • Hi ChantyKitty!

    Welcome!

Colleen said it GREAT! I completely agree with all she said!

Every one of us here has an issue with food. Like alcoholics, foodaholics must always stay vigilant so that food does not control US.

  • Hey! Glad to see you here!

There are ways to combat the food high. The first step is to realize that once you've binged, it's too late. The eating has to be avoided in the first place. I agree with kaplods--get the foods that trigger a binge completely out of the house for awhile. Make a meal and snack plan so that you are able to eat normal amounts throughout the day so you don't get overly hungry.

You might also want to try keeping a journal for awhile--so that you can explore what it is (if anything) that you are using food to replace or to cover up.

Another possibility is to join a group. This kind of behavior is not uncommon, but people tend to hide it. By joining a support group, you'll be able to keep it out in the open where you can look at it.

And feel free to come here! You might check out the Chicks in Control forum that addresses some eating disorders.

    Good luck!
