Cheerios
Ok, so I'm missing Cheerios. I haven't had them since last September and I love them. I used to eat them every day. Today, I'm eating them and counting points but I really want them to be Core. I know they have sugar in them (a tiny bit of sugar). I'd love to count them Core but I really don't want to abuse the program. I'm SICK of eating oatmeal every day for breakfast. 9 months is enough! I love Farina but it costs me points for the smart balance. I'm also going to look for they SBD recipe I had for ricotta/cottage cheese crepes. But.....I want Cheerios.
I'm wanting a really honest opinion. If it were you, would you count Cheerios Core or would you count points? Maybe I should look at the nutrition information on the Core cereals for comparison. Does anyone eat them? Of course, I threw my Cheerios box away because it's in my tupperware cereal container. I could get the Cheerios nutritional information online. I think it has no fat and 2 grams of sugar for one cup of cereal. Help! |
Well, I checked and between the skim milk and the cereal, Cheerios have 2 grams of fat and 1 gram of sugar for a cup. I think the sugar comes from the milk but it was hard to tell.
|
So one cup of Cheerios is 2 points and, of course, I'll want at least a cup and a half. I don't really want to spend 3 points a day for cereal.
I guess since I'm losing so slowly that I really shouldn't be tweaking the program. Can you tell that this is a dilemma for me? Maybe they won't taste as good as they used to. I'm off to eat them now. |
I would count them. I think the amount of sugar is negligible, and as long as you don't overdo it, I think it's okay. The occasional tweak hasn't hurt anyone so far!
|
Count them as points or Core. Sorry, I'm being stupid this morning!
|
No, it's me! I meant to say I *WOULDN'T* count them -- as points, that is. I'd consider them Core.
|
I'm eating them now. They taste every bit as good as I remember!
|
I think if you can limit yourself to one reasonable serving a day, it shouldn't be a problem. If you love them that much though, the abuse factor is pretty high. Maybe only have them every other day, or something like that.
We go through so many boxes of Cheerios (OK, generic ones) here at my house. They're one of the kids' favorite snacks. Angela |
I'd be a happy girl if I could eat 1 and 1/2 cups every day for breakfast. I'll go every other day for now, just to be safe. I miss cold cereal. I'm a child of the 70's. We REALLY grew up on cold cereal.
|
Vickie, have you checked out any of the "natural" brands of Cheerio-type cereals. I think there are some with little or no sugar. They'd be more expensive, though. Personally, if you are just having it for breakfast, I wouldn't sweat it. It's not like you're having six bowls or something (like my kids do.)
|
Cher, I didn't know that there where "natural" brands. Would I find these in the supermarket or would I have to go to a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods Market? I'd be willing to try them.
I'd like to eat 2 cups. My 1 and 1/2 cups is a concession! |
Hi Vickie -
I'm not a cheerios eater, but I do eat cold cereal almost every day. I just tried Fiber One -- it's core. At first I didn't care too much for it because I loved my shredded wheat, but now I'm coming to really like it. It's shaped like sticks and they say a serving size is half a cup (ha ha). Anyway, I bring it up because it's pretty good and may be something else to try. Walmart carries it. If you're heart is set on Cheerios, I'd try them maybe three times a week and see if your weight loss is impacted. If not, then they're core-enough for you and I wouldn't count them. I agree that if you think Cheerios will be a trigger food for you, then count the points. Good luck! |

More about cereal.
I went to Target tonight to get a few things and saw the cereal aisle, so I thought I'd see if those organic O's were there. They weren't, but I saw some Weight Watchers Vanilla Puffed Wheat. They look like mini Sugar Crisps (known now as Super Golden Crisp) ... but when I was a little girl, I remember the sugar bear singing "...can't get enough of super sugar crisp!" They taste great! If they're not Core, they are absolutely as close as anything else! They are sugar-free, whole wheat, and if they have to be counted as points, it is 1 point for a cup. They are small so there's very little air in that cup, mostly cereal. One cup of cereal is usually all I want so there's no chance of overdoing it for me. |
