Um .... well, there's no added sugar, but I just don't know. I can't find anything that specifically says Grape Nuts in any of my literature.
I personally like oatmeal, and usually add 1 pt of nuts and splenda, plus milk of course. My DH eats is "raw" with fruit and yogurt.
I don't do the core program at all, but I eat oatmeal every single morning ... I take half a cup of the dry stuff and let it sit in milk or soy milk, fat free of course... The oatmeal absorbs the milk, I also add 1/4 tsp each of sunflower seeds, wheat bran, wheat germ cereal and ground flax ... Splenda to taste and vanilla sometimes too, tastes like granola to me...

Grapenuts
My WW leaders favorite cereal is Grapenuts ...she was very disappointed because it is NOT a core food. I wish they were ... :(
Too bad, I really like grapenuts!
Just look under the carbs on the nutrition label. If it has sugars listed, it isn't Core. That eliminates about 99% of the cereals out there, unfortunately :(
I like oatmeal with sweetener, vanilla, and cinnamon. Sometimes instead of the vanilla, I cut down on the water and add some unsweetened applesauce (and more sweetener.) You can make a decent Core apple-cinnamon oatmeal that way. I also put cinnamon on my bite-sized Shredded Wheat, along with the sweetener-- makes it taste vaguely like Cinnamon Life cereal. :) |
Daniel, sugar isn't the only reason a cereal may or may not be core. It has many other factors that come into play.
All I know is, I was told that any cereal with added sugar is not a Core food. I didn't say that a lack of sugar meant it WAS Core. Perhaps I was misinformed about the sugar, but isn't that also what it says in the Getting Started book and the Food Companion? I looked through the FC for Core cereals and man, there weren't many. :(
If CORE is supposed to limit "processed" foods, grapenuts are definitely gone. I was told that puffed rice and wheat are o.k. Those are not only processed but totally empty calories - unless you get the whole grain varieties at a health food store.
I think cereals are one area where WW is going to have to make some changes eventually. There are a lot of cereals now that are actually healthy, good sources of protein and fiber and B vitamins, even if they have a tiny amount of sugar. Hey, Sarge. |
I like Cream of Wheat. :) Personally I like it with FF Butter and salt and pepper. :)
There's also puffed rice and puffed wheat. Trying to think of cereals for you that aren't stick-like. :)

I have been unable to find Sugar Twin Brown Sugar Substitute. I noticed it was mentioned in the above response. Does anyone know of a store chain that carries it?
tia, k |
I tried it. It was terrible. I'm sticking to Splenda. It sweetens it nicely but doesn't have that brown sugar taste I know you are looking for. Of course, I never could go for any of the artificial sweeteners until Splenda came along.
I found a brown sugar substitute the other day and I think it was made by equal or sweet n low... I haven't tried it yet though. Does splenda make a brown sugar one?
