Steel Cut Oats

Where do you find these? My grocery store doesn't carry them. Do health food stores have them? I have seen a few recipes for these but can't find them.

I found mine in my local health/natural food store. There are in the bulk food section, about .89/pound around here. When you get them, I highly recommend the crock pot version, it's the easiest way I've found to cook them.

Try Trader Joe's if you have one. Also look in your grocery aisle that has the organic foods. You might find it there.

No Trade Joe's where I live, but my grocery store does have an organic aisle. If I can't find them there, I will check the health food store. Thanks for the info!

They are in all the regular grocery stores around here with the other oatmeals. Quaker makes a steel cut oat now too.

I'm not on Core, but am trying the Flex plan...but I wanted to tell you that I was able to find Steel Cut Oats (also called Irish Oatmeal) in the hot cereal section of our Wal-Mart Supercenter. It came in a can rather than in a box.

I made up a variation of a South Beach recipe with it the other day, and I will say, it's very filling.

I have looked everywhere in my grocery store and they don't have them. I haven't checked the health food store yet, but maybe I can check the Walmart Superstore. Thanks!

So...what's the difference between Steel Cut oats and, say, Old Fashioned oatmeal oats?

Ann72 05-02-2008 01:44 PM

Old fashioned oatmeal is rolled resulting in small, flat, round oats. I think some of the fiber is lost in the rolling process. Steel cut oats are not rolled. They have a harder texture and look like little bullets. Even when fully cooked, they are harder/crunchier/nuttier. I love them, particularly when made with milk and with a little natural peanut butter and splenda mixed in.

They were in the organic section at Wegman's, near to the other oats and cereals, if you have one of them near.

We don't have Wegmans here, but I did find them at my grocery store, Meijer. They were in the baking aisle, with special flours and wheat bran.
