Pasta sauce?

  • Is pasta sauce Core? I mean the kind in a jar. Seems to be just tomatos and herbs, so it should be. But I'm sure when I read the label I'll find out there's added sugar.

Are any of the jarred sauces Core?
  • Jarred pasta sauce always has sugar. I think that Hunt's Spaghetti sauce has the least. Here is a really easy recipe though.

    Marinara Sauce Recipe

    1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
    2 small onions, finely chopped
    2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
    2 stalks celery, finely chopped
2 carrots, peeled and finely chopped
    1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    2 (32-ounce) cans crushed tomatoes
    2 dried bay leaves

In a large casserole pot, heat the oil over a medium-high flame. Add the onions and garlic and saute until the onions are translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the celery, carrots, and 1/2 teaspoon of each salt and pepper. Saute until all the vegetables are soft, about 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes and bay leaves, and simmer uncovered over low heat until the sauce thickens, about 1 hour. Remove and discard the bay leaf. Season the sauce with more salt and pepper, to taste. (The sauce can be made 1 day ahead. Cool, then cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat before using.)
  • Easy Spinach Sauce

1 package frozen spinach, cooked and drained of all water
    1/2 cup vegetable broth
3 cloves garlic, more or less to taste
    1 tsp onion powder
    salt & pepper to taste

Put spinach, garlic and spices in blender and add 1/2 of the vegetable
broth. Blend until smooth, adding more vegetable broth if necessary (more
broth = thinner sauce). After blending, return to saucepan and heat until
hot. Serve over rice or pasta
  • Oh, that spinich sauce looks great!
  • I make a very fresh tasting pasta sauce using:

    crushed garlic
    chopped onions
quickly fry these in olive oil..on low heat.
Then I add one tin of diced tomatoes with some oregano and basil.
I also will add one or two ladles of the pasta water, after its boiled. (this is a tip I saw on foodnetwork)
I reduce it a little and just before serving it over pasta I throw in some spinach leaves (fresh)
mmmm now I have to make some haha
  • That sounds good! I enjoy making my own since switching to core. I always found that the one's in the jar were always too sweet. I like my pasta sauce spicier. I might make your recipe this week and add some red pepper flakes.
