Protein Snacks

  • Hey Everyone,

I was banded on March 20th and I go for my first fill two weeks (May 23rd). I would like to know what is considered a high quality protein snack. I am suppose to have two a day, but I am not sure what this consists of. So far I am still doing shakes for breakfast, because I am not a breakfast person and this seems to work for me. Then I have a WW smartone or lean cuisine for lunch and a healthy dinner. Lately I have been getting hungry between lunch and dinner and figured I need to find out what I can snack on.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  • My favorite high-protein snack is beef jerky. Surprisingly, its actually low-cal while being satisfying, and remarkably low fat/high protein. I try to buy mine at healthfood stores, because the sodium is a bit high, but even if you have to buy it at the local 7-11, and you don't have any sodium limitations, its really protein-rich (obviously, if you're limiting your sodium, this isn't going to be a great choice unless you buy it at a specialty store). As an added bonus, its nice to have snacks that don't require a special trip somewhere to buy - if you are stuck without a healthy, high protein snack and you're ok with the extra sodium, you can walk into any gas station and get something satisfying.

Egg whites are the other high-protein favorite, but not very portable (unless you're a hard-boiled egg fan). My sister used to carrie little baggies of turkey breast with her everywhere - put a new bag in every morning, its ultra lean and also high in protein.
  • you'll have to try out a few things because some will work better than others. i've done very very well with beef jerky, and some people like turkey jerky as well.

soy nuts are a great source as well, the roasted ones. just be sure to eat them slowly as they can be dry and sort of STICK.

if you can pack an insulated bag or have some refrigerator space, some deli roll-ups are nice as well - like turkey or roast beef or chicken wrapped around some shredded carrots or some other chopped veggie. you can also wrap them in lettuce leaves [they're actually quite good, ya know!]

some people find that yogurt works - i need to add some protein powder to plain yogurt in order to get it to work for me.

also cottage cheese is wonderful. and if you slice a couple of strawberries in there - yumm!!!

get yourself those little 1/2 c containers in the aisle with all the wax paper and plastic wrap. best investment you'll ever make!

other things - but be sure to watch your portions, as they can be fairly high in fat: peanut butter, cheese [1 oz is fine - 3 oz are not!],

    hope this helps!
  • Ladies,
Thanks for the suggestions this really helps. I am certainly going to do the deli roll-ups, that will work well for me after lunch. It good to know there is actually something I can get from the 7-11 besides gas and water. I do like beef jerky, but I did not know I could still have it.

    Thanks again.
