How Did You Decide You Goal Weight?

  • I chose 155 because then my BMI would be "overweight" instead of "obese," which is what it is now (179, down from 198).

    I might change it once I get there and go lower, but that remains to be seen.

  • Like most people here, I based mine on a healthy BMI, memories of how it used to feel/look, and how you feel when you get around there. For example, mine is 150 but the last time I was down there I was pretty happy just to be under 160, probably because I finally could get into size 12 jeans around 155. I also think it's also important to remember to pick one you feel you can really maintain without having to exhaust yourself daily.
  • Since I have very wide hips and my butt is pretty big, I settled for 175 because I know I could never be 130. Also I want to be thick, not fat, but thick. I think I will look horrible if I was 130 anyway, and since im tall I think 175 will look great.

All of your post have helped me out in deciding mine also, just thought back to what weight I looked best, and that I maintained the longest in my adult years and think Im finally settling for 125 to 130. everyone on reaching your goals
  • I base my goal weight on the BMI chart. According to the chart between 111 to 150 is ideal weight. I had changed my goal weight from a 150 down to 140, only because if I gain 10lbs it would be consider over weight so I backed up the number to about 10 less and made it 140. I do not think a 140 is to bad of a number to shoot for.
  • I don't know, I just liked the way 150 sounded. I've been told I carry my weight VERY well, and although I probably could lose more after that, I definitely don't want to look emaciated, especially in my face. And at 150, then I'll be half the woman I once was. I know I'm going to like to be able to say that. My collar bones have already made an appearance, so I'm thinking another 35 pounds, they will really be sticking out. My normal BMI starts at 159, but I know I want to be under that number. I'm hoping I'm happy at 150, because I'm so anxious to get on to maintenance. I'm just hoping it will be easier than losing, but I don't know, I've heard the stories.
  • Right now, for my height and my weight, I am moderately overweight, and I do not want to be over weight at all. I did this frame test..take your index finger and your thumb and put it around your wrist comfortably do not force.

    Small Frame : fingers overlap
    Med. Frame : fingers touch
    Lg Frame : fingers do not touch.

    I have a large frame, so the most I can weigh to be normal weight is 150, lowest 115. Now.. I do not want to be 115. I said 140 because I am a normal weight even if I flucuate. I weigh so heavy though, at 156 I wore a size 7, now at 169 I am in a 8/9 and my goal size is a 5. So I am really more focused on that. I dont really care what I weigh when I get to a size 5 but Im pretty sure it will be 140 when I get there, so thats how I got my goal. Sorry for all the blah blah blah in the middle.. I get long winded some times
  • For my height and age, the suggested range is between 120ish and 160ish. I selected 135 because it's just a little under the halfway mark and gives me a little wiggle room.

    I always assumed I had a medium frame, and now, using Ready2Shed's method, it seems I was correct (my fingers touch). I like that method, by the way -- right to the point and easy to do!
  • I've always been overweight, and I set my goal weight at 200 pounds by the time I turn 21. (June 2nd, 2007). That left me with 150 pounds to lose. I've been thinking more and more lately, that I'm going to want to get down to 170-180 after making that goal, but we'll see how I feel at 200, first. I set this goal, because I want to be curvy. I have no real desire to be "thin". It's interesting to see the BMI numbers go down, but I don't really base anything on it, because we are all built differently.
  • Right now it's the top end of what's healthy for my height, but I hope to drop another 7 lbs after that, b/c I know I've been a comfortable 128 before, so it's attainable. For now, though, I'll settle for being healthy!
  • I just picked it out of fresh air! It's always been my mum's "dream" weight and I thought since we are the same height that it'd probably be nice for me! However I'm chocked fulla muscle at the moment and probably don't look 163. I'd like to lose another 10-20 lbs just to see what happens. Who knows, in 10lbs time I might be happy, or in 15lbs I might love what I see!

    That frame test thing... I think my bones have shrunk! At my highest weight I could get my fingers to touch, but now they overlap!
  • I notice that many of us have the same goal (140ish). For me, the last time I really lost weight (back in the early 1990s), I got down to 140. Later, when I gained it all back (and it didn't take long), I looked at my pictures from that time, and really liked what I saw. I had also bought some nice clothes that ended up hanging in my closet, and they ended up being my motivational clothing. I told myself that when I did lose the weight again, I would work towards fitting into those clothes. So that's how I set my goal. Now that I am in those clothes, I find that I would still like to lose a bit more. So I would say realistically, that I am within 5-10 pounds of being where I'd really like to be. But I'm trying hard at this point to not be fixated on a number, because my tendency is to beat myself up over it, and not celebrate the progress I've made up to this point.
  • I had a body composition test run. They found (based on my body fat percentage measurements from calipers) that I had a lean body mass of 124.5. I figured 25% body fat was a healthy number, so I added 25% of 124.5 to 124.5 to get an ideal weight of 156 pounds...
  • I chose my goal weight based on what I have been before...I first had set the goal for 135 but after thinking about it I think 130 would be better for me....4 years ago I weighed my lowest at 138 and I knew I could lose a few pounds.....I am really not that concerned about the "number", I might even lower my goal to 125, once I get to 130...it all depends....
  • I've never been thin, ever. I've always been overweight/obese for as long as I can remember (I can remember way back to the time I was 5). So basically, I picked a number that sounded good and was at the high end of the "healthy" BMI chart and went with it. If I get close to it and decide I don't need to lose more, that's fine. If I reach it and need to lose more, that's okay too! It's just a general figure to go for and adjustments are made according to how you actually look and feel.
