SBD and Glycemic Load

  • Ok Ladies,

I have been reading the book and find it very interesting, but I do have a question about the glycemic index and glycemic load. GI was first, but in the last few years GL has come to the fore in that it takes not just the sugar and carb content in account, but also the fibre content. What this basicly means, is that a carrot, for eg, has a high GI, but a low GL! I do know that Dr Agatston has become more leniant with veggies for Phase I, but I was just wondering about the difference.

    Thanks
  • It's my understanding that it's the total carbohydrate content that makes up the glycemic load. They use carrots as an example because they have a high GI but not very many carbohydrates so they have a low glycemic load. From what I can tell Dr. A goes by how much fiber and how much sugar is in a product or food to tell if its SBD approved or not rather than the total carbohydrate amounts. I think as long as you're eating appropriate portions from the approved food lists you don't have to pay too much attention to GI's or GL's.
