YAY! I'm obese...

  • or, more accurately, by most measures no longer morbidly obese!! My BMI is at 39.6!

I got confused trying to figure out the distinctions -- everyone seems to use different standards and labels and cutoffs (is there one standard?), but it seems that, no matter what, getting below 40 is good!
  • YEAH!!! I can't wait to get to that point!
  • That's brilliant, wyllenn! It's a great feeling, eh?
  • Yeahhhhhhhhh...that's awesome!!!! WTG!!!! I see you've really been working it with the cardio too....you are a rock star!!!!!!
  • That's so awesome!!! I hate the BMI because it seems that the obese range is HUGE but the healthy range is so small. Why is that?!
  • I am proud of you and for you. What your doing is working, keep it up. Great job!
  • Way to go! I had wondered where the marker was between "morbidly" and (regular--ha!) obese!

Sabriena, you are so right! It's gonna take quite a while to make the move (for me) from obese to merely "overweight"
  • Congratulations!

According to the calculator at the CDC, I'm at 42.7 - I didn't even know what mine was til now. Their chart says 30.0 and above is obese, and 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight. The don't list morbidly obese separately. However, the American Obesity Association says 40.0 and over is morbidly obese.
  • Thanks for all your good words -- it IS a great feeling.

Yes, the obese range is HUGE! I think I figured I have to lose another 60 pounds to get to just "overweight." That's too much for me to think about now (though come to think of it, I've lost almost 60 pounds now...), so I'm just going to think 1 day and 1 pound at a time.
  • Woooohoooo!
  • Congratulations! One of the first things I did when I registered on this site was calculate the weight ranges for the different BMI categories, so I understand your elation at reaching "obese." I can't wait to be there, it's my first goal!
  • Andrea -- I didn't really think about BMI for a while, so it was quite a shocker when I realized I was morbidly obese. Then again, I suppose that's a shocker just about anytime you find that out.

Turns out that when I started (with a BMI of 49.1) I was nearly "super morbidly obese" -- a category some people use.

    Good luck in getting there!
  • Wow, congrats!
