Water flavoring with no calories...

  • Hey all.. I've been drinking water with a water flavor added to it. I found it at wal mart.. the brand is Great Value I believe. The package says that it has 0 calories and 0 everything else. Well, I was wondering if it matters if I drink it with the flavor or just plain water?

When I drink it with the flavor it just feels like I'm not drinking enough water although ultimately I am drinking water.

I'm just wondering what everyone's view on it are.
  • I would definitely count it towards my water intake, unless the flavouring contains a caffeine agent. I've always found it difficult to drink my 8-10 glasses of water (especially in the winter) and manage my daily requirement by including quite a bit of sparkling water/club soda or flavoured mineral waters (lemon, lime orange). I'd certainly be interested in this product ~ what flavours are available?
  • That would definitely count as water the way I see it. Well, it IS water, just with a little flavor is all. If the flavor is what is going to help you to get in the water you need then I say go for it.
  • Ok.. I just wasn't really sure.. since to me if it's not just water.. or what I usually did of putting lemon juice in it.. then I wasn't doing it right :P

The flavors it comes in are: lemonade, peach ice tea (which is so good!!), raspberry ice tea, orange (it reminds me of tangish in a way), fruit punch, and I'm not sure if there was another one or not. They taste really good too. For something that's has no sugar or sugar substitute. I was surprised.

Thanks you guys for your input I'm going to keep putting it towards my water intake. That makes me feel better!! Because winter time really is the hardest time for me as well to drink water straight! Especially when it's too cold!! The flavor does help a lot!
  • Can you tell me ~ is that walmart flavored water carbonated? Is it sweetened with splenda or aspartame? Just curious.

    Thank you for your help.
  • No.. it's not flavored water.. it's water flavoring. It comes in a powder that you add to the water. I got the packs that you put into water bottles.

Ahh good thing you asked about the aspartame, I didn't realize it had that in there until I was LOOKING for it. So yea, I suppose it is sweetened. It does have aspartame in it.
  • Thank you for your help. I have seen those. I found some that were sweenened with splenda. I have been using them at work. I like sipping on something with a little flavor. There is also some aquafina ~ called flavor splash ~ raspberry and cirtus. It is already prepared and in a bottle. It is real lightyl flavored, sweetened with splenda. It is very pleasant tasting. I found that at Walmart also.
  • The jury's still out about aspartame and its role in diet. Some say it stimulates appetite and cravings for carbs and sugar. That *could* account for not feeling as sated after drinking a product containing it.

I just read this link and found it interesting. Of course, there's tons of info online, both pro and con, about aspartame, Splenda and other chemicals. People can find data to back any arguement, so in the end the consumer's got to figure out what works and hope for the best, I guess!
  • Interesting article, Kimberley. I read a similar study a few years ago about how the use of fat substitutes (Olestra I believe it was) results the consumption of more real fat. It's as though the body knows it's not getting the real McCoy and refuses to be cheated.

Apart from the occasional diet pop, I don't go for sugar substitutes. I prefer the taste of drinks without sweeteners, and they're difficult to come by, so I usually end up making my own iced tea and lemonade. Canada Dry do a totally unsweetened fizzy water with no caffeine and no sodium. It comes in lemon & lime and raspberry, and both are delish.
  • For me, I only count water as water. Not to say this stuff is bad for you at all! I would compare it to a crystal light type of thing... little or no calories. I don't have a hard time drinking water.. just a hard time NOT drinking soda
  • According to my kidney doctor, liquid is liquid is liquid, UNLESS it includes caffeine. When I was on liquid restriction, green tea counted towards my daily liquid intake, coffee did not.

I'm not sure what the "right" answer is, I just feel like anything that's getting you to drink more water has that going for it.

Since I am no longer on liquid restriction, I will probably put Watkins flavorings into my waters, or cut them w/a few tablespoons of 100% juice.
