New American Plate: New Cookbook!

  • So since we have another book thread going, I thought I'd share a new (2005) cookbook I discovered this weekend: The New American Plate. I find this is a great book to dovetail with Calorie Queens in the sense that this one is also advocating lifestyle changes. Put out by the American Cancer society, the book basically challenges the American focus on MEAT as well as portion sizes. They provide about 200 recipes with a big focus on grains, vegetables, and fruit with very complete nutritional info.

There's a funny story in the intro about the Society holding a conference and dinner for supporters and they served everyone a plate with the recommended 3 ounces of meat portion on it and then served 3 accompanying dishes (2 veg, 1 grain). Instead of serving spoons, they provided measuring cups--so people would have a REAL sense of what it was they were recommending.

The authors give a very realistic philosophy to food, nutrition, health and eating that I find very appealing (as well as some beautiful food photos) and while they note that the portion sizes may seem small to many Americans (probably not to us since we've been measuring our rice already ), they also indicate that some people will eat more than 1 serving of certain things depending on activity level, weight, etc. I.e., they're not presenting a "YOU MUST DO...." approach.

There are 9 amazon reviews so far and it's a 5-star book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/052...lance&n=283155
  • That looks very interesting! Thanks!
